This ad really reflects my opinion of their attitudes.
The big three were laughing at Toyota & co. for making hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles instead of SUVs and hummer-sized SUVs. They got into the game too late and they're paying for it. If it was any other business there wouldn't be a bailout. Argh... </rant>
Edit: Interesting trivia on Toyota... apparently the owner's name was Toyoda but they changed the name to Toyota so the kanji used 8 strokes, which is a lucky number. (Of course I haven't researched this more than 30 seconds so I might be wrong lol)

Funny I was listening to the head of the CAW following the announced approval of the bailout and he was blaming the decline of the big three on foreign trade and how we should be taxing imports more or some such. Show's you how far behind the times these guys are, that was the same logic they applied back in the sixties to try and limit the expansion of Toyota and Honda.
Realistically the best thing that could happen long term is for the companies to file for bankruptcy. This way they are able to shed the unions and pensions (yes the government will end up having to cover the pensions, but that's probably a better use for the money than a bailout) that are sucking every last drop of life out of these companies. They're not going to disappear though, there is money to be made through these companies and products, you'll have private equity firms clamoring to buy up the the profitable components of these companies giving them a fresh rebirth without all of the excess weight that they are carrying right now. So no, all of those auto industry related jobs that everyone is scared about are not going to disappear.
As it stands right now we have to remember that the bailout isn't a handout it is a loan, with the expectancy that it will be paid back within a determined timeframe (don't know what that is, but probably within ten years or so). Ford last I heard doesn't even need the money as they are kinda financially sound, but are requesting it as they figure that the collapse of Chrysler and GM will send shockwaves throughout the industry damaging their parts supply and channels of operation. Chrysler is in trouble but a very wealthy private equity firm, Cerberus, has majority share. Cerberus just bought Chrysler from Mercedes a year and a half ago so we have to assume that they thoroughly examined the balance sheets before figuring it was a good idea to purchase the company. If anything, they should put forward the equity required by Chrysler to keep it moving.
GM in it's current position is pretty well screwed. They have to completely rethink their product strategy, significantly cutting down on number of models, concentrating on getting a couple good products in each size class. Which I guess they're doing with the speculation that they might kill of Saturn but it has to go much further than that. There is way too much duplicity among their range. I can't even imagine how much money it costs to bring a car to market, even a rebranded one that's already being made. GM had a commercial maybe a year or two ago advertising that they had thirty or forty new models being released that year!!! Just off hand there is no need for the Pontiac G5 and Chevy Cobalt to both be on the market when both are the exact same car, especially when GM is also selling the Saturn Aura which is better than both of those. That's not even taking into consideration that the unions have GM so bent over there is no way for them to be making money and become a productive company without shedding them. Only reasonable way for that to happen is to file for bankruptcy.
That's my take on the current situation anyways, I could be way off

Personally, I'd rather buy Toyota over any other car except for Mercedes and Audi but they are at a different price range.
I like the reliability of the Toyota and the looks opposed to the BIG 3. They have crappy designs, crappy milage and other stuff that I am not interested in.
If they do push for a bigger tax on imports, that would be stupid because lots of people are loyal to different things. GO GO Toyota! Lazers PEW PEW!

Exactly man, Toyota designs rock  The corolla, echo, yaris are design mavels man, I hope toyota continues to make these type of designs. Toyota and Acura are definitely tied for best vehicle designs ;)
Crappy milage, please check EPA ratings and POST YOUR FINDINGS, so we can all look at some facts that you speak of. I hope Toyota atleast has 10MPG more than the crappy GM/Ford engines for each model lineups, probably does! Go toyota!

What I've found is that most Toyota's have a higher MPG than any of the 3 big companies but if you are rich, by all means have lower MPG's.

what package are you talking about? various posts here have provided sources that show the toyota specifically isn't better or worse than any of the domestics.
is it the fuel efficiency? nope
looks? definitely not
handling? definitely not
reliability? not so much anymore, maybe slightly but thats eroding rapidly.
price? nope
resale? yes? maybe?
so you're buying a car based solely on how much money you might or might not lose in 5 years when you go to sell it?
basically it's all based on perception. and honestly i kinda don't blame people. they got burned in the past and they're afraid to go back, but when people who've never owned a car just blindly repeat what their friends and friends friends have told them without any current basis in reality, that gets annoying.

I have owned an AE92. Rode in Celica, Corollas, Camry's and MR2's. My family owns an Accord. I think I can justify my experience well enough. If by owning my own vehicle has no basis of justifying my perception, than what does?
-I've been into other vehicles too... vans, 4x4's, suv's etc.
Throughout all my experience: Toyota, Lexus and Acura are by far more promising to me than the big 3. While Benz and BMW don't compare they are higher on the scale so I will not critique them.
