I bought this car a few weeks ago. It's a manual transmission, and lately it feels like the gear is grinding when going from 1st to 2nd if the RPM is over 2.5k.. It's kinda weird.

Sometimes it seems to do it, sometimes it doesn't. Either way, is this a sign of that gear going? I live in Japan, so having to gun it from 1st to 2nd at over 3k RPM is rare (I have to go from a side street to a 50km speed limit hwy every morning), but I don't like how the shifting (sometimes) isn't smooth from 1st to 2nd when the clutch is out.

Second gear grind is normal in all honda's. Especially during the colder months.

Some people have some grinding issues in their 3rd gen integra. Usually changing the transmission oil to Synchromesh solves it.

I'm pretty sure the normal Honda "grind" is from 2nd-->3rd.

To the OP, it's a sign of a synchro getting weaker most likely, something to watch out for, but like I said, the 2nd-->3rd synchro being weak is a normal thing.

good to know. I'll change the transmission fluid when I get back from vacation.

Though I have to comment about the guy who mentioned the cold. It has gotten colder here lately, and after the car warms, the grinding seems to disapear.

I'm really greatful for the info!

What type of MTF should I use? It seems like a quick search suggests GM Syncromesh MT, but because I live in Japan, I dunno if it's available. Any suggestions on a good high end MTF i could try/get in Japan? I'm pretty sure it's the original MTF in the car, so I think it's due for a change anyhow. (now that I think about it, how many km should you go b4 changing the MTF?)

Pennzoil Syncromesh = GM Syncromesh Fluid

Used it in all my Honda's great stuff.

get the honda MTF, they reformulated the fluid to synthetic. im sure they did the same in Japan. or go to AutoBacs and get some Motul/or Redline etc. ask the guys there , they ll know what to get. be prepared to get raped on the prices at autobacs though.

how often? once or twice a yr. depending on your driving style.
