I was at best buy richmond hill today and was planning on buying a subwoofer. Today is the customer appreciation sale and subwoofers are technically 25% off. On this website though

http://www.bestbuy.ca/marketing/pcs_dec08/en/offer2.asp?newlang=EN&logon=&langid=EN

it specifies that it excludes alpine, the way it excludes ipods and what not. I asked the guy if he can cut me a deal on the Alpine Type R just because it says 25% off all car subwoofers. He rang it up and pow! $162.74

This is even lower than 25% off. (off $216)

This was one hell of a pricing error. It might've been because of the promotion, it might also only be at this one location.

At the same time I decided to pick up the Alpine M1000 amp just because I was having a nice day and just happened to be $100 off.

This is the subwoofer:

This sub POUNDS if you are feeding it right and have it in a tuned box. People won't believe that it's just one 12".
I bought mine a year ago for $100 shipped off of ebay, brand new. If you do buy it new, make sure you break it in properly before you crank it up.

Sorry for asking this totally unrelated, how is this sub compared for the JL Audio W3? I'm looking for a used one, and saw a few and they are around 70-80 for a 12 inch. Not sure how they sound though, even though i know they are premium subs. Thanks for any input.

as long as you feed the sub properly, the sub sounds awesome

JL is a SQ sub though whereas the Type R is an SPL sub so its hard to compare

I don't want to take the wind out of your sails, but while this is a good price, the markup on car audio stuff is huge at Future Shop/Best Buy. He probably gave you their cost plus 20%. A guy I know used to work there and he said their profit on car audio equipment is second best to computers. You would have to be a sucker to buy any car audio equipment there at full price, especially those Monster Cable packages. They mark those up to hundreds of dollars from their cost of around $25. Sometimes Princess Auto gets Monster Cable stuff in their surplus section and you can find it priced in the $35-40 range, where Future shop will have it for $190.

Um, Computers have practically no markup at FS/BB. So it's hard to believe they would have better markup than Car Audio. In fact, for laptops and PC's for staff members it's cheaper to buy at regular retail price than it is to buy it on their discount.

Accessories/cables have the highest markup (including TV stands/wallmounts), then the car audio world, then probably home theatre/digital imaging.

Be that as it may, is there anywhere you would recommend that has less markup on cost?

I am assuming it is even across the board for competitors in terms of how much they mark up and charge over cost. Even though FS is charging a 20% mark-up, is there any place you could get it cheaper?

So what really? you always have to look at what you're getting for the price and determine whether or not its worth it to you. You can't just think that you're getting ripped off and not buy it out of spite. This can actually have a reverse effect because, what if the store owner decides to jack up the regular price and then put a sale tag on the product which takes the price back to the original. Then the consumer will think that he/she is getting a better deal because apparantly you're saving some 20%. And unfortunately for many people they naturally assume that the higher the regular price, the higher the store cost, and therefore the less they are getting ripped. It's all strategy.

And for some things like those Monster cables, just befriend an employee and be happy.

it is a low end SPL sub
there is no way anyone would say that a Type R can produce the ranges to be considered SQ

the Type R is meant to pound... it doesn't pound the greatest, but that's what its meant for
