Future Shop has the Kingston 8gig SD for $79.99
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10109418&catid=25941

CTY has the same card for $19.99
http://www.cty.ca/productdetails.asp?pid=3141

After a price match, you can get it for $13.99

$19.99 - $6 (10% of ($79.99-$19.99)) = $13.99

I just PMed two about an hour ago with no hassle or arguments.

I tried something like this with FS PMing Canada Computers for an MS Pro Duo card. No go since I'm in BC. They wanted to tack on $10 for shipping.

That depends on the PDA - it has to support sdhc cards

EDIT:
CTY Computers is not listed on Kingston's list of official resellers (http://www.kingston.com/canada/wheretobuy/default.asp?id=8), which can be used to deny a PM by FS. There is also no info about them being official reseller on the CTY website.

CanadaComputers is listed on Kingston's webpage, and it just so happens that they sell Kingston microSDHC 8GB (SDC4/8GB) for $25.99 (http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=019308). So if you get denied on CTY pricematch, you can try PMing CC. Ends up being 25.99 - 0.1* (79.99-25.99) = 20.59 + tax - which is more than CTY's price, but you dont risk buying a knock-off...

NOTE: FS lists this card as "SDC4/8GBCR", while CC & CTY as "SDC4/8GB". It might be a good idea to have a printout of the Kingston's product page (http://www.kingston.com/flash/sdhc_micro.asp), which only has "SDC4/8GB" as the Mfr. Part Number in case they say it's different part # .

And the first thing that you say to this is that "SDC4/8GBCR is a non-valid mfg part #, and you have a typo on your webpage", which you prove by producing the printout that I linked to in my previous post.

lol, price matching should be banned from Hot Deals. It's always YMMV and with smaller retailers, FS is stupid to even acknowledge your attempt. Anybody willing to waste time and effort on this deserves to get it, but for the rest, it's not worth the hassle over a few dollars.

I'm not disputing that PMing small retailers is YMMV, but then isn't it true for any PM? They (FS/BB) sometimes try to weasel out of their own policy, denying to PM dell.ca or BB/FS ("the same company, etc.").

What you can do is be persistent, try different stores / different times.

This deal is YMMV, but you can try to get it if you want. Would be hotter if it didn't mean PMing CTY (that's why I tried CC, but it comes up costing ~the same as @ CTY). Still, this is doable.

Dunno about you guys, but my friend complained that he got fake Kingston MicroSDs when he bought them a few weeks ago from CTY (4 GB).

They were for his cousin's NDS flashcards. Gameplay was laggy. Maybe it was a bad batch, but he seems to be stuck with it either way.

Couldn't you just bring it back and exchange it for another one? They're usually nice enough to do that. I've done that before twice for a usb wireless adapter.

Hear Hear!

PMing to save $6 is really not worth the hassle. PMing to save hundreds, yes, but why get into an actual ARGUMENT (even if no voices are raised) with a FS manager who is basically REQUIRED by management to find those loopholes in their PM. I tried to PM against Canada Computers (to save about 15 dollars) and I will never bother with it again. Their claim with CC is that there is a restocking fee if you return it, and FS does not charge a restocking fee... but then I say to FS "then charge me a restocking fee if I return it... don't charge it to me before I return it!", but alas, no. If there's any way out, they'll use it.

Remember: if you have something to PM, you already have a store that is selling at what is probably a really good price: why support FS who keep their prices way high, and even when it's on sale it's not REALLY the best deal anywhere... give CTY your business and help them grow!

I was at a futureshop this morning to get a TV for my parents for xmas.

waited 20min for a service rep. but nobody even looked in my direction.

Then went to the camera department to see if I can get a PM on the 8GB microSD. Waited for another 20minutes and left without buying anything.

I usually only head to futureshop during the xmas season because they hire a lot of new employees who are overly eager to provide prompt service. But not this time, so no money for them this xmas.

I concur that the CTY cards are probably fakes. I also concur that PM'ing is a f'ing PITA. As someone else mentioned, for a few hundred, ok. For something like $7-10... Forget it. Not worth getting all frustrated over and wasting time.

Dec 9th, 2008, 12:56 PM
they are just being a$$, i used to work there, and trust me, ppl who work at futureshop, especially sales guys hates redflagers. Becasue redflagers go in and PM something and it will kill their margin for the day and put them in the negative side on their sales report, and will look really bad, plus they work on commission, so they are not making a cent off of you and their margin gets slaughterd, hence the reason they don't want to do it and will come up with any execuse they can to refuse it. If you really want to make a scene, you'll probably end up getting the PM, but IMO, not worth it. managers are always on employees side, so what ever the employee tells you, manager will most likely to agree.

I just came back from the FS @ yonge/dundas. Here is what happened..

- I printed the item with the 19.99 price
- made sure CTY.ca was an offical distributer for kingston products
- Canadacomputers is one and CTY.ca is affiliated with CCs
- asked if I could price match more than 1 item, she said just take one...I took three
- went to pay for it, was pulled aside to a lone register and I was able to buy 3, HOWEVER it was for 19.99 (no 10%), I told him that however I didn't want to go through the trouble again as it was quite busy there

They recognize this and I must say you must be a little persistent. Firstly, the woman helping me said they do not price match with CCs, however it is clearly an official distributer of kingston products, I even said, "i thought you just said you dont PM with CC"....she basically said nothing lol. She then called kingston to verify if CTY.ca was one too, however she just hung up and said, "okay, i know cty.ca is part of CCs but they wouldn't have it on the site." She signed my little print off, went to pay for it and viola...3 for 20 bucks each.

So I went into the Empress (North York) FS today, not knowing that CTY.ca was affiliated with CC. It took me a whole twenty minutes because a CSR kept shutting me down saying that she had "worked in FS for 7 whole years," and that she "knew the policy better than [I] did". She clearly didn't because I walked out paying 13.99+tax.

What worked in my favour was that the little "PM Policy" sheet that they had didn't state anything about non-authorized stores. She told me that she could PM it for 100% difference, but wouldn't give me the 10% because CTY.ca was not "authorized". After telling her to point out the exact line where this was stated in the policy about 5 times (which she has 7 years of experience with ), she gave up and handed it to me. Nothing was mentioned about the part number issue. :)

By the way when I got there, there were about 30 of these things in the cellphone section.

CTY is not affliciated with CC. It doesn't make any sense to open two stores beside each other for competition on College St.

If you bought fakes from CTY and can prove it, they are nice enough to give you a refund. I am sure of that much. Make sure you find the older looking employees and not the teenage looking dudes because they are the ones who can make the decisions.

If i'm in Montreal, will this work or only where there is a CTY or Canada Computer store?

Theoretically it should work. No harm in trying as long as FS/BB is not too far for you. Gas ain't cheap or free.

CSAgent
Dec 9th, 2008, 09:34 PM
I actually had a PM denied at BB because the return policy of the other store had a 15% restocking fee.. which is complete BS because they make no mention of that in their PM policy.

If it's too low after PM, they'll try to thwart your attempts however they can

Try again, their PM policy online says nothing that competitors return policy must match that of Best Buy's. They are LYING, to you in front of your face. I'd take that personally, I do not take kindly to liars.

Ottawa Merivale FS refused to price beat CTY's price and will only entertain pricing matching their price ($19.99) + shipping.

However, they have no problem to price beat CC (there is a local branch) so it is $23.00 tax included. I'm happy :)

I bought 2 at Yong & Dundas in Toronto for 13.98 at 7pm - they have many of them
They do not have them on the stand, but they have them in photo demo area right at back side of photo sellers - see there.
Just seller was not going to give me that unbelivable discount, but her manager said that CTY is authorized dealler and they match prices
Thanks for the deal

How much is shipping for those of us not in Ontario...doesn't FS need to know the cost of next day shipping and then price match off that?

if you're PMing online, i'm sure FS will do that.

might be diff. exp. instore (YMMV)

in the past i remember some RFDers in ON getting FS/BB to PM a store like NCIX

i think the most recent e.g. was ppl in the east trying to PM that Pioneer 50" LCD HDTV that Visions had on sale back in Sept., and some slided by w/ a PM and w/o incurring s/h charges

they should be obligated to do the 10%, ask for the manager and get the manager to explain their policy to their employees, if they deny it politely ask for their name and tell them you'll call corporate

Heartland IS a total sham - I was insulted by Adeel the operations manager yesterday. He explicitly told me not to waste his time and take my money elsewhere since he's too busy to deal with me right now... I called Head Office and filed a complain with 2 separate managers, we'll see if his ass will still have a job come Christmas... Heh.

I'm so sick of these big box stores not honoring their policy. The moment you try to use it they make you bend over, jump over hoops and fire/spikes/dog poop just to get it...

If CTY isn't an authorized dealer, how the hell did they get the product in mass quantities in the first place.

I work in distribution at one of the major distributors listed on Kingston's website - and I can tell you to qualify for a price level that CTY must have in order to sell it back to you consumers at $19.99 each, CTY must have been an account that's at least 2 years old, authorized Kingston reseller, spend at least $40k $50k CAD a year. So in all likelihood, they purchased it at way below my employee cost and have some kind of special deal with Kingston themselves.

FYI, Futureshop buys a LOT from Ingram Micro...you should see the actual cost of some of their items. I have a contact at Ingram Micro and get this, the actual cost of this card is...get ready for it.... $13.26. And they marked it up to $79.99... that's $66 in straight up profits each unit! At least, that's FS pricing level with Ingram, different resellers have different pricing levels dependent on a number of factors.

If only my company distributor consumer electronics...then I'd have no reason to shop at electronic stores. Computer parts though, I use my employee pricing. Although, some items are cheaper at CC or Infonec due to them buying mass quantities and special pricing with the vendor themselves - that pricing does not get pass on to us employees... But still, as an example: When the GeForce 8800 Ultras were like $700 at CC, my cost on it was $575.62 - the brand was PNY.

i had a successful price match at FS is vaudreuil-dorion, quebec. But it came to 18.76 before tax. The girl working included shipping.. I was going to buy just one and the shipping was about 9$. So we added 2 cards and shipping stayed the same. So i bought 2 cards and she divided the shipping.. So worked out to 18.76 each...

Still i think it is a good price for a 8gig card.. Need a card for the mio gs i ordered. was just gotta get a reg sdhc card, but figured the mirco was an added bonus if i decide to use it else were.... What was funny was i could have added over 50 cards before shipping price changed... I joked around telling the girl at fs that i should buy 9 of them this way shipping would work out to 1$ each :).....

I tried something like this with FS PMing Canada Computers for an MS Pro Duo card. No go since I'm in BC. They wanted to tack on $10 for shipping. That's pretty much the case everytime I see a thread titled AFTER PM. Now, I just take a peek at the thread and move on. I don't do PMing any more as it's too much hassle. I just go with whomever has the cheapest sale price. No questions asked, no hassle, no frustration everytime, unless the itme is OOS.

Wow, the manager at Young and Dundas hard lined me, and was firm in the "they're not an authorized dealer" and refused to give me the 10%.

Totally asses about the whole issue. The staff were outstandingly rude, even by Future shop standards (and that's miles above the mild manner service one normally get at cty), going on about such issues as "not the same return policy," and "probably not in stock," and even outragously "what price matching they did at store 071 (the printed reciept from CSAgent) could not be done here!"

While I smiled, and was polite to them, I quickly learned that all I was doing was wasting my time. So I decided to waste their time having them explain to me, bit by bit. And I shot down every excuse they gave. Still the manager in the end, hard lined that he would only match the price.

Well, it turns out it doesn't work in my phone anyways, so I guess I'll just return it. lol.

While over at Blacks to print out some photos, I saw some guy scoping out the microSD cards. After some chitchat, I passed him along the print outs I had, and told him about the price matching at Futureshop. I hope he got a good deal too, lol.

btw, does anybody know where to get a microSD to MSduo adaptor? thanks.

I would call the FS head office and register a complaint about this manager. As long as managers keep trying this crap it will never change and they need to be held accountable. Dealing with FS corp has been really good everytime I have had to.

Well, the manager was giving me hard time too but I challenged her on all bs she told me. I told her "Dont give me bs as I just call your FS Service Deapartment before I came and they will do the PM as long as they have it in stock.." Of course she doesnt trust me at first but I insisted her to call the FS HQ directly NOW! At the end, she's speechless and I got it...

Since my phone can not use the 8 gig, I went for the 4 gig at FS. It is showing as 46.99 on the website, but when I went into the store it was only 19.99. Went to the cashier with my CC printout for 12.99 and was able to get the pm without hassle. The guy is telling me that all prices are dropping on digital memory...

due to the PM'ing from RFD.

Future shop is having a sale on it. Now 49.99 in store. So 17$ now. Still fair.

Fair and Futureshop do not belong in the same sentence.

Just got PM tonight. I ordered online but local store pickup. Tried to do PM online to minimize hassle without luck. was told that I have to do in local store. I printed out CTY 19.99 and a Toronto receipt from another guy here. I did PM without much hassle while my family doing shopping. I knew I'm not supposed to do the PM, just have luck! Store is forum@atwater.
Thanks all!
If you don't get the deal, I'm sure on boxing day you will have it.
BTW, in store it is 49.99 starting from today.
