Well, enclosures with Firewire, esata and usb are not cheap. And, with this it's assembly free as well!

I bought a 3.5" hard drive enclosure which has esata/usb for $20 (normal $40) on sale, and will add the seagate drive 7200.11 for another $122 which brings my total to $142. Not bad if you build it yourself. Not hard either.
Still a good deal though.

Maybe, if you read the OP, he said INSTORE only. So, has anyone seen it instore in Vancouver?

Read the reviews for this external hard drive on amazon.com
Most of them are negative, i'm staying away from this one.

These HD are great for 24/7 use as they auto-sleep (power saving) but for those that like to plug+play, they take longer to connect than most other external drives. Also there's no power switch, as soon as you plug in both usb (mini-B, USB is the only option) and power, the HD remains on unless you unplug it. Comparing this HD to iomega and simpletech (both 1TB), i don't notice any speed difference once the drives loads up (takes a minute to load up tho so initial start up is slower). If you don't use it for about 15 minutes (never really counted, feels like around 15), it will automatically goto sleep. When you need it again, it will start waking up (initializing), which again takes about a minute (probably less but again its not like im counting).
Also i think the 2TB mybook right now is a hotter deal (329.xx in store) since 2TB drives similar external drives are selling for > 400 everywhere (at least last i look). Not that its a hot deal but i do find it hotter than the 1TB mybook (which was on sale for 149.99 @ BB during boxing week).

Although high-speed USB 2.0 nominally runs at a higher signaling rate (480 Mbit/s) than FireWire 400, data transfers over S400 FireWire interfaces generally outperform similar transfers over USB 2.0 interfaces. Typical USB PC-hosts rarely exceed sustained transfers of 280 Mbit/s, with 240 Mbit/s being more typical. This is likely due to USB's reliance on the host-processor to manage low-level USB protocol, whereas FireWire delegates the same tasks to the interface hardware. For example, the FireWire host interface supports memory-mapped devices, which allows high-level protocols to run without loading the host CPU with interrupts and buffer-copy operations.[4] Besides throughput, other differences are that it uses simpler bus networking, provides more power over the chain, more reliable data transfer, and uses less CPU resources.[22]

When are people going to realize that Costco.ca prices are hardly ever the same as the in store prices?
Seems like every time someone posts a Costco in-store deal this thread reoccurs.

Someone bumped the thread from December. The price is probably different in store now. Rebates don't last a month at costco.

This sometimes troubles me, why would its own online store charge a higher price. Who would ever order from Costco.ca if they can simply walk into a store? Plus, I found they carry different goods online which you don't find in stores, ok, those are the one you have to order online, but the same thing at higher price such as this HDD.
Anyway, for people talking about buying a 1TB HDD and an enclosure, note that if you want auto-sleep, the enclosure is not cheap (definitely not your $20 ones and even if you find one, it likely has worse build quality compared to these pre-built ext HDD). So, if you can get this at $168, it's a good deal.

My advice is to stay away as far as possible from this device. I had a LOT or problems with this product that I bought at Costco and returned after 3 month of usage and troubleshooting. Here are the main problems that I had :
1) The Esata connector doesn't connect with a Jmicron chipset on my motherboard. So people with Asus motherbord are screwed if the want to use that option. I re-installed my OS and tweaked my BIOS several times to make this work
2) The Firewire connection are iffy. It works most of the time BUT I had some issues with it.
3) You have to unplug the drive if you use USB or Firewire or the computer won't boot. It will stay on the welcome screen. This is true for Windows XP Pro. I haven't tested this on Vista.
You have been warned..

When I was at my local Costco between Christmas and New years they were clearing out a limited supply of the (#552000) white 2 TB world edition ones [Model WDG2NC20000CN] About 6-8 were on a flat cart at the front of the store near the checkouts. They were marked $349 regular and then in hand written marker they were reduced down to $288. I seriously wanted to grab one but held off...Kinda kicking myself cuz I have never had any probs with anything WD. I assume they are going to have another product around this same size coming in to replace this one, as they no longer have anymore, but they still have plenty of the 1TB's on the floor. I think that 2TD would have made a great NAS, but I had just picked up a 16 gig Ipod Touch so I didn't want to get anymore new toys.

I can't say anything about your other two issues but this issue is almost certainly a problem either with your PC or windows By the time you get to the welcome screen all USB drivers are already loaded.
IN any case the very fact that you could take it back after 3 months because it is from Costco (along with 2 year in store warranty) has me sold over any drive from FS or NCIX or other online retailers.

Interesting. I have just noticed a similar problem, where Windows gets stuck on the intro screen. Never thought to check if it was the hard drive causing the problem. Anyways, a second attempt at booting always does the trick for me...no need to unplug the drive.
As a side note, the drive works well under Ubuntu 8.10 via USB (and also WinXP running virtually in VirtualBox). Haven't tried firewire or eSata yet.

Sorry about that, maybe I was not precise enough on that issue. Windows was blocking at the intro screen. It doesn't boot completely. And if I unplug the drive, it goes through no problem WITH all my other USB device.

Unbuntu boots a lot FASTER then Windows so the impact is less important. On a Windows system, it's annoying and frustrating when it takes 2-3 minutes to load everything
Man I need a drink just thinking about that WD drive.. ;)

I agree... I have this drive still, and the only reliable port on it is the USB 2.0 port. I also have an Asus board and trying to connect with Jmicron eSata chipset. Will connect initially but lose connection in short period of time. So only buy it if USB 2.0 is all you need.

We are using it quite succesfully with our FTA HD receiver as the PVR.

I think there is a better two-way transmission rate. Overall if you're trying to write and copy at the same time both firewire and eSata excel over USB 2.0.
Once u go eSata u don't go back :-0. This deal is decent for those looking for the added connections, and don't have the know-how to assemble their own drive.

I spoke too soon as I am now experiencing similar behavior on Ubuntu...booting hangs if the drive is plugged in. Disconnect it and all the sudden it's happy again.
Not a major issue as I have it connected to my HTPC most of the time.

May I ask which Costco in Vancouver you visited to find the $179 price? Was it the downtown store?
