I sliced off a part of my bumper on a building a while back. No damage to the building, only to my car, and I'm going to replace the bumper out of pocket. I'm not really familiar with laws concerning this type of stuff, so I'm just wondering if I have to report it to anyone? Is the collision reporting center only involved if you hit someone else or is it required for minor damage you inflict yourself?

Also, if I were to get into a major accident that needs to be claimed through insurance, would this minor unreported damage come back to bite me? It's a cheap car and I don't have much comprehensive coverage on it.

Yes, you are supposed to report it. If you do, your insurance premiums could possibly increase and you will definitely be at risk of increased premiums in the case of a future claim, accident or ticket.

If I were you, I wouldn't report it to anybody. It's not going to come back to bite you if you don't report it because nobody will ever know.

That would be considered a collision - which would affect your insurance.
