Globe & Mail free airline tickets

I just received a call from a lady selling subscriptions to the Globe and Mail. She is offering two free airline tickets with a minimum three-month subscription to the Globe and Mail.

Here is the information I was able to find out from the phone call.
- I need to commit to minimum Monday-Friday delivery at $26 a month, or Monday-Sunday for $31 per months.
- After the three months have passed I will receive a brochure detailing the different destinations offer. These will include North America, Hawaii, Europe, etc.
- I can bring a guest with me or give the tickets to two other people.
- I must commit to staying at one of their hotels for around 3-4 nights. If I am not happy with the hotel I may leave following the minimum number of nights.
- The lady worked for a company called Comtel. She was not prepared to mail me any details but did provide me with her phone number and extension. I can call back at anytime to get this promotion as long as it is still available.

Any thoughts on this deal? I'm wondering if they are really selling the Globe & Mail or if its just a cover to sell travel products. I also wonder how much these hotels are actually going to cost. Perhaps a call to the Globe directly will answer some of these questions.

Two flights to Europe for less than $90 seems to good to be true.

Definitely a scam,
The hotel's prices are off the chart and they have mandatory meal which are beyond off the charts. Just think, why would they spend money to hire a salesman to call you to sell something which is free.

I would tend to agree. At first the deal didn't seem too good to be true as a couple short-haul airline tickets isn't that crazy an offer. The second she mentioned Europe and Hawaii is when I clued in that something was up.

This seems one of those "if its sounds too good to be true, it probably is" moments.

Too many restrictions and offering a free flight nowadays seems counter intuitive to the way the economy and airline industry is functioning.

Globe and Mail website states that Comtel is their primary telemarketing provider. (But any scammer could have found that out the same way I did). Comtel can be reached at 1-800-565-4562. Is this the same number you were given in the call?
Also from the G&M website in their FAQ section:

The Globe and Mail uses proper logos, links and designs, and does not capitalize And in "Globe and Mail."

The Globe also doesn't use privacy domain registrations:

The exemptions include telemarketing calls made by, or on behalf of:

* Canadian registered charities;
* Political parties, riding associations and candidates; and
* Newspapers of general circulation for the purpose of soliciting subscriptions.

So if you get any calls from any of telemarketers trying to sell you something which involves anything other than the 3 stated above.
It means they are scam in the first place by breaking the law indirectly.

lol! Ya know, if this is a legit deal from the Globe and Mail, I would be very disappointed. I mean, you'd expect a major publication to be able to spell properly. From the website: "... unparalleleled national, international..."

A couple of years ago Taylormade had the same deal. If you bought a Taylormade driver they would give you two plane tickets, and I am pretty sure it was the same company offering the deal.

Needless to say, this does not look very legit.

For your "honeymoon"? Wow... you really have to draw the line on your RFD cheapness or you might be looking at a quick divorce in the future. Oh yah... there's a good deal on quick divorces a few posts back.

But it's just not that great a deal either. :D

That is, you will get your hotel stays and "free" flights (I'm sure there'll be fees and taxes on the flights), but when you total the amounts you'll pay, the deal won't be nearly as good compared to if you had booked this on your own.

And the Globe and Mail is very cheap about its subscription rates... it seems only students may get a discount, regardless of how loyal one has been. :( :mad:
