I have had the complete opposite experience, the Sony 8x +R have been some of the best media I have ever used (very good scan results etc.) but this was when Sony was just rebranding Taiyo Yuden media, not sure what they are using today but back then if it was MIJ it was good stuff. my .02

memorex ?

Cause memorex is worse.

I used to use them for CDs, but for DVDs, I only buy Verbatim, Sony, and some older Maxell.

16x media is mostly made by Daxon at their factory in Taiwan or Malaysia.
I think I saw a 16x MIJ 5/10-pack (not spindle), but I don't know if it's by Sony or by TY.
A small number of Sony discs are made by Lead-Data, but from what I can gather, it's mostly Daxon.

He said Memorex cause Memorex sucks. That other guy thinks Sony sucks, obviously he's a noob.

Thank you! I just used my last DVD-R tonight and was going to order some Verbatim 100 packs from FS during the F&F sale but this is better. I just need to wait a few days which I think I can manage. :)

Yes, the finish that sony uses for the top is the best i've seen on a DVD. I'm talking functionally here. I don't get the same results when writing on other discs with the various cd markers that I have.

Sony DVD's are good if you get the ones made in Japan or Taiwan. Just avoid the ones made in Malaysia, which alot of them seem to be now.

How does one tell the country of manufacture, when looking at the sealed package?

I've made my fair share of coasters over the years, but could usually attribute it to multitasking versus quality of media.

Sonys old stuff was good the new stuff isnt. Coasters! Spend an extra couple bucks and stick with Verbatim you'll save yourself time, money and headaches in the long run!

I can't believe how disinterested people have become...

In the past, whoever bought blank DVDs was usually kind enough to post some information: where the disc is made, what is the media code... it only takes a couple of minutes to do this right.

Nowadays, all the comments are more or less superfluous or worse... some say these are good, some say these are coasters, and nobody bothers to support their claims with some solid proof.

You'd think this board was taken over by 13 year-olds... you care more about making off-topic remarks, focus on the colour of the font you use to post, or brag about previous *better* deal you got in the past.

And then we wonder why these forums have gone down in quality...

Where is DigitalDolphin when we need him?

LOL, thanks for posting the info, folks... I haven't got any of these (even at a higher price, since the deal won't start for another couple of days) and I wanted to know if they're any good, beforehand. Otherwise I'd have posted a scan myself.

From what I see, the -R media code SONY16D1 is a bit of a gamble:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmediasearch=&dvdmediadvdridsearch=SONY16D1&type=11&size=All&dvdburnspeed=All&order=Name&hits=50&search=Search+or+List+Media

Meanwhile, the +R with media code SONY D21 seems to be more reliable:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmediasearch=&dvdmediadvdridsearch=SONY+D21&type=11&size=All&dvdburnspeed=All&order=Name&hits=50&search=Search+or+List+Media

With both media types, it appears that it's a good idea to avoid the 100-disc spindles.

Thanks again for posting the good info, guys - dmxlite and SomeGuyGG ! :cheesygri

How am I able to post anything when I don't use them. Its common knowledge that basically the only 2 brands to buy are Verbatim and TY, and even TY are hit and miss, that is if you dont want to spend like a $1+ for some of the specialized disks. Too many people just care about the price and not the quality. There are going to be a lot of people bitching 3-5 years down the road that all their dvd's are distorted or unplayable.

I have over 5000+ disks of Verbatim I can vouch for them. Never had any problem with them verses other brands.

I also have quite an extensive experience with recordable media. Been burning CDs since 1997, for instance. Yet, I have also encountered really BAD Verbatims... this spring, PCCyber (Ottawa) had some 10-slimcase packs of the printable variety which were also HORRENDOUS - most players wouldn't read them, and even Nero would choke after recording, during the "Data verification" stage.

So, it's not a question of brand anymore (if it ever was)... just look at the ratings for the CMC-MAG media code Verbatim discs, or the Ritek ones:
