What's their position regarding the issue?
If you install winter tires, do you get a discount?
If you're involved in an accident and didn't have winter tires, could an insurance company deny your claim?

Wouldn't that depend on which province you live in?

Ontario, but my question is boundless.

In Ontario there's no law dictating the use of winter tires. Yet.
No.
No.

1. I find that winter tires do seem to work better in snow conditions as they are designed to maneuver in snow better than all-season tires. In ice conditions, they are favourable but you still have to be cautious as the tires are not perfect on ice!
2. It depends on the insurance company. I am with Belair and the are offering me a $91/year discount for using winter tires.
3. I do not think they would deny your claim. I think you will get in trouble regarding not having winter tires. Some companies, I assume, are going to want to see proof on the installation of tires.

sometimes a discount for winter tires still makes the over all annual premium higher than some insurance companies... best to shop around and check your options..

me too with Belair. The guy on the phone told me that they only got approval to offer this discount last week.

Belair emailed me only today offering 5% discount for winter tires, but still better than not telling at all ;). The actual amount looks more like 7% but I suppose that's because it is based on the full rate before all my other discounts.
It would be great if people with other insurance companies that offer such a discount posted about it too! It may not be a big enough deal to switch companies over, but it's perfect for those who qualify for it and don't know about it.

Other companies can still be cheaper than those companies offering the winter tire discount. :)

Belaire will give me a 5% discount for tires.. but they want 5k a year for two drivers and two cars.. vs the 2500 a year desjardins would want.. both drivers over 30, one accident on the one, clean on the other.
Looked at the cost to add a $500 beater car, everyone wants another 1000 a year or so
Sad, eh :)

I know Desjardines give you a 5% discount for installing winter tires. I believe they were either the first or one of the first insurance companies to offer this back in the fall. You will have to call in and let them know what type of tires you got (brand and model) and whether they are installed on all wheels. The reduction is effective immediately, so if you pay monthly payments your next scheduled installment will reflect the discount. If you pay annually they will send you a refund for the difference. Not all insurance companies offer this discount. For example, I ditched Desjardines and went with Gore because they provided a better rate and coverage and apparently they do not offer a discount.

That's the bottom line. Even though some companies may offer these discounts, they may not necessarily be the best/cheapest for you.
It pays to shop around!
