No it isn't in place yet.

http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bills_detail.do?locale=en&BillID=2099&detailPage=bills_detail_status

Bill 118 still has to go through a standing committee, third reading, and then finally receive Royal Assent.

P.S. correct me if i'm wrong. I'm not 100% sure on this! but am fairly confident!

Maybe. Same as Quebec. But people just tint their windows and keep using their cellphones.

I think Ontario also banned aftermarket GPS.

They don't have enough cops to enforce this law.

What?
How the hell that is possible? Did the government get undertable money from car manufactures? They may as well ban aftermarket stereo.

Why do they always try to find something else to blame? but ignore the fact that driving education system in ontario is a joke.

Is the Ontario Cell Phone ban for drivers in place? People tell me it is but I can't find anywhere online that says it's official yet.

Read the bill itself. It does not specifically ban GPS units.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends the Highway Traffic Act to prohibit driving
with display screens and other devices in motor vehicles, as
follows:

Driving with a television, computer or other device with a dis-
play screen in the motor vehicle is prohibited if the display
screen is visible to the driver. Global positioning system navi-
gation devices, commercially-used logistical transportation
tracking systems, collision avoidance systems and instrument
display screens providing information regarding the status of
systems of the motor vehicle are exempted from the prohibition.
Drivers of ambulances, fire department vehicles and police de-
partment vehicles are also exempted. The Minister of Transpor-
tation may provide for further exemptions by regulation.

Driving while holding or using a hand-held wireless communi-
cation device or electronic entertainment device is prohibited.
Use of such devices in the hands-free mode is exempted. Use of
such devices while the motor vehicle is off the travelled part of
the road, not in motion and not impeding traffic is exempted.
Drivers of ambulances, fire department vehicles and police de-
partment vehicles are exempted from the prohibitions respecting
hand-held wireless communication devices, as are any drivers
using the devices to contact ambulance, police or fire depart-
ment emergency services. The Minister of Transportation may
prohibit holding or using other devices by regulation and may
provide for further exemptions by regulation.

I don't think that aftermarket GPS is banned...you just can't be physically holding it; it's fine if it is mounted to the dash...for my understanding anyways.

I heard that iPods weren't included but it looks to me like they are...any confirmation?

I would be surprised if this law goes through. It will be extremely difficult and time-consuming to enforce it. GPS should be allowed in cars. Frankly so should cell phones for most people. I think it's a small percentage of the population that's incapable of driving with them.

I would agree on a ban of driving with iPods tho. They're not part of the car. Same with laptops.

The bottom line is that some people can't drive very well. Jetway said our training system is terrible. I can say I've personally seen some a couple questionable things at the training centers too. If this law does go through that would probably be a good place to spend the money.

I don't like this one bit, I have to talk on my cell phone while I'm driving because driving is so boring so I need something to distract me and keep me entertained!

I doubt banning these will improve their driving habits anyways

Hmmm, if cities and jurisdictions bigger then Toronto, and Ontario have implemented this, I don't see what makes us so special or different.

And I'm sure that you are such a skilled driver that you have no need to pay attention when you drive??

How about concentrating on your driving!

Why do people even need to talk on their phones while driving? Unless its something like a really long trip and need to confirm a few details. Even then, few minutes at most.

Well other drives have brakes and should pay attention to me, so I'm fine I haven't hit anyone yet. Plus I can drive with no hands while I'm on the phone I just use my knees to steer.

i noticed this law taking into effect.. no more stupid cars leaving 5 car lengths space because they are talking on the cell.

one thing is for sure, regardless of enforcement, psychologically, people know about the law and will talk less on their cell, which significantly reduces traffic congestions and accidents

My driving instructor a few years ago told me to keep 1 car length for every 10km/h on the speed limit - so 5 car lengths for 50 km/h, 10 car lengths for 100km/h, and so forth

Maybe the drivers you're talking about are just keeping very true to that rule ;)

(I like to keep my car lengths in front of me, but I don't do 1 car for every 10 km/h.)

Ok, they've implemented it. That doesn't say anything about how successful they've been at enforcing it.

I really hope this is sarcasm.

They said they won't start enforcing it until the fall.
And even then, sadly, there's not going to be all that much success with enforcing it--it's just too hard to enforce something like this. Hopefully with the fact that it's illegal some people will stop doing it.
