Hey Guys I was just wondering on your thoughts about the Denon AVR-789 A/V reciever.
This will be my first AV unit ever soo im kinda new at this. I choose Denon as a starting point because its a great brand and alot of people say this is a good unit.
A few questions would be; is there something similar to this that has the same quality and power for a lower pricetag? (other brand perhaps or lower end model?) (just soo many :**( )
Im gonna get speakers after as I just wanna use this to combine all my Electronics to my tv via 1 hdmi to have the setup nice and neat.
Can anyone recommend another equal competing unit that maybe comes with speakers? Im just soo confused cause FS and BB has all these recievers with packages and speakers and I dont know which one to buy :(
1080p and HDMI are a must and I did like that multi room feature. (or is this all just bs and don't matter?) (5.1 or 7.1 whats the bonus of each?)
It will be used for Sat, 360, wii, ps3/blu-ray ect ect, And hopefully a kick ass speaker system.
Is this a good starting receiver that will last me for years or am I making the wrong choice thanks guys! Let me know what you guys have atm too!
Not sure about pioneer or yamaha are they good too?
I know you get what you pay for but I just needed a lil audio advice from you experts. :)
saving as much cash would be great if possible hehe

That's a long post and a lot of questions. There are competing models at lower prices with similar features.. Sony has one. However anyone will tell you Sony just doesn't make the same quality of receivers as Denon and there are a few features missing as well. Denon has Audyssey which I won't get into but it's a really nice equilization feature (of course you don't have to use it). Pioneer & Yamaha both make good receivers but the prices aren't any better generally.
It's a very futureproof receiver - it has upconversion of video sources to 1080p, DTS-HD MA & Dolby TrueHD decoding (the most important feature IMO), 3 hdmi inputs, etc.
Don't buy models that are packaged with speakers (Home-Theatre-in-a-box) as typically they are lower quality and the speakers are often sub par. At the end of the day this is a great future-proof receiver and don't hesitate to buy it.
The only thing I am hesitant about is that you admittedly know very little about receivers. It's kind of like recommending a good plasma TV to someone who might be happy with just cheap CRT.

I think the brand you're looking for here is Onkyo. You'll find that they usually have the same features/technical specs for a lower price. I have one myself. The only thing I don't like so far is the UI for the setup, doesn't seem very well designed. On the other hand, you won't really be using it all that often once the thing is setup, and I don't know if the other brands are any better in this regard.

I was always under the impression that Onkyo was lower priced than Denon in the US.. but not in Canada. Onkyo isn't sold at many places here in London though so I might be mistaken.
Where would you suggest is a good place for lower priced Onkyos?

... i would say go over to the avs forums... I am sure they have a whole thread dedicated to this avr. The users on that forum helped me decide my next avr purchase.

Sometimes I think AVSFORUM will just end up confusing newcomers, at least for the first while.
However I do agree it is the best source of information by far! They do have a thread dedicated to the Denon - it's quite long and informative.

Onkyo TX-SR606 seems to be the Best Value, it's the clear favorite on the Poll I started on High-Def Digest. I went with Denon (AVR-2808CI) because I've always wanted one since I got into HomeTheater, it's like wishing one day for a BMW, Lexus. LOL
The Quality is there, I couldn't compare it to Onkyo because I couldn't get my hands on them but when I compared it to Yamaha's HTR-6190B, I thought Denon had more Crisp, Full & Cleaner Sound. I also found it Easier to Use and I love the Universal Remote that came with it.
1080p and HDMI are a must and I did like that multi room feature. (or is this all just bs and don't matter?) (5.1 or 7.1 whats the bonus of each?)
If this is your first Surround set up, you will love 5.1 but I think if you can afford to spend the money for the addition 2.0 to 7.1 I recommend it/having Surround Backs make a huge difference.
It will be used for Sat, 360, wii, ps3/blu-ray ect ect, And hopefully a kick ass speaker system.

My old Panasonic 5.1 lasted me 10+ years. I'm sure Denon will.
Not sure about pioneer or yamaha are they good too?
I think Yamaha is between Onkyo & Denon so you can't go wrong. As for Pioneer, I only read up on their Elite series which of course can cost as much/more than Denon, Onkya & Yamaha.

I bought the Denon AVR-1708 last year at about this time and I love it!
I would definitely buy Denon again. I say go for it.
I paired my AVR-1708 with a PS3 for Blu-Ray, and for speakers, Paradigm Cinema 220 L/C/R, Paradigm ADP Surrounds and a Paradigm PDR-10 Subwoofer.

Hmm, I never knew that. I'm in the US, so I have no idea where you could get it cheaply.

Yeah, talk about information overload. It took me a long time to figure out which one to get. I eventually got the Onkyo TX-SR876. I still don't fully understand half the features it provides, lol.

I bought the 889, so far i love it. Also the 789 and 889 have the audessey features which i do not believe the lower end onkyos have.

Perhaps figure out what speakers you will be getting before starting to buy anything?
I'm still waiting for my speakers to arrive, so I've noticed a few minor issues with my setup related to having no attached speakers. Only HDMI audio will be passed through to the TV, so if you're using SPDIF or analog connections, you get no audio coming from the TV. I think I can get analog audio with a separate connection, but I never bothered to try. Also, as far as I can tell, none of the audio processing is passed to the TV either. Of course, none of these are actually problems once you have speakers connected.

Just get it - as long as it's not outside of your budget you're not going to regret it.

I have a 789 and am pretty pleased with it. To be honest I've not had a chance to play around much with it, I know it supposedly has a smart EQ feature (don't remember the exact name) which levels off the volume when commercials come on which in my case I've not had a great chance at getting to work (but that's just my laziness).
Overheating isn't an issue, does 1080p passthrough well (which I like). Only thing I can think off is that you may well eat through the 3 HDMI inputs quickly. I know the 889 is quite a bit more expensive (has 4 hdmi ins + 1 at the front).
Trouble free, no issues with HDMI relating freezing (common with earlier HDMI receivers).

alright hopefully gonna pick this up soon :) its on sale too hehe yay
Quick question
If i connect my 360 and sat via component to this thing will I be able to watch and hear it through the 1 hdmi cable going to my tv? (guess combine signal or something?)
This is what i am hopefully looking forward to so I dont have to run (snake) 100s of wires to my tv and just have everything sent via 1 cable to my tv. That would be a godsend!!!

Yes you will though I believe it won't accept 1080p over component (only hdmi) even though the xbox can output 1080p over component.
Not a big deal as you won't find more than 2 games that do full 1080p on the 360.
