help with hdtv's

so my parents want to get rid of their old 32 inch sdtv and replace it with a good 40-50inch hdtv. they asked me to pick it for them and i know a thing or two about tvs but not much, that's why i came here :P

so, basically all they're going to use the tv for is satellite (not hd sat) and that's it. i was wondering, for people who have sd satellites (is that what its called) should i just recommend a slightly cheaper tv (like 40-46inch 720p tv at a lower price) instead of a full hd 1080p that costs more? they won't be watching any blurays and i don't they'd notice a difference. i might use my ps3 on it a few times a year but that's it. i'm thinking of going with the 1st option but if it's a 200-300 more for the second then why not.

other than that, can anyone recommend a good manufacturer to go with? i hear samsung are good as well as sony (but more expensive).

oh and how much would a 720p 46inch great quality tv normally cost? 40inch? especially with boxing day coming up, what would be a worthy price range to look out for.

Why would you buy an HDTV and not watch high-definition TV or movies? Just curious.

Tube TVs display better standard definition than flatscreens, they will be disappointed.
It's the main reason why I'm still hanging on to our Sony CRT... for regular cable.

However, once you put HD on your plasma or LCD, they'll be like
"I can see their wrinkles, sweat, makeup..."
"That looks so fake"
"Yeah, that is definitely the stuntman"
"OK, porn should NEVER be in HD"

Just make sure you find something that displays SD better than other sets, because there is a lot of variance, and it makes a LOT of difference. Normally I'd say check out a Pioneer plasma if its in the budget, but if you're never going to be watching widescreen content, maybe you should stick to LCD (even though burn in and even IR can almost not happen on my Pioneer). I like my A650 Samsung LCD, it does a very good job with SD, all things considered.

If you parents are like my dad, they won't notice that their shiny new LCD sucks more than their old CRT, and will just be happy that its on the wall. Just go with those $700 720p 42" LCDs or something.
