" ... According to Pioneer's internal roadmap, its super multi-layer technology development is read-only (ROM) discs in 2008-2010, rewritable discs in 2010-2012 and 1TB (1,000GB) disc in 2013, the company indicated. ..."

The uses for a 400GB blu-ray are all theoretical right now.
- Canadian ISP's suck so you can't download "better" quality Blu-Rays and burn them
- Blu Ray discs, players & burners are still overpriced
- PS3 BD drive is slow as hell and the larger disc space won't yield any advantage for gaming.
At least that's my opinion of it.

Longer ps3 games, more content, huge soundtracks. Larger GTA type games. Once again, more content.

Im sorry to burst your bubble, but the games are not limited by the disc space.
First of all, developers don't have the time on their hands to invest thousands more hours into creating a longer game. These 8 hour games are not done because they don't have the resources, it's because 1) they don't have the time and 2) longer games are not appealing to most casual gamers.
The PS3 hasn't even been taking advantage of blu-ray as much as people think. There's an incredible amount of padding on the discs just so they can fill the thing and access times are quicker.. Not to mention all the talk about uncompressed audio and video taking up so much space, when they greatly increase the access time.
"Yes, now Rockstar/Square Enix/Insert Company will make 100 hour games because they can use 400GB discs!!"
Think again.

Final fantasy 7 (4discs, CDROM) vs FF 10 , 12 (1 disc DVD).
Stop hating, like bigger capacities will make no difference whatsoever. Please

I have 2.5TB of disks on my PC; backing that up would take 500 DVDs or 50 blu-ray disks.
OK, much of it is data that I don't absolutely have to back up (e.g. DV video files that I could recover from tape), but 400GB is about the minimum to do a complete system backup in a reasonable number of disks. And with video cameras increasingly moving to RAM recording rather than tape, that 400GB disk is only enough to back up a couple of hours of low-compression HD video.

Congratulations, Final fantasy 7 was released - when?
We'll talk when they actually fill a blu ray instead of padding it.
Bookmark this and bump it up in 2013 for all I care.. These discs won't be used, especially in gaming.
Quit acting like these software devs have infinite resources to make games as big as they want and create the best looking textures possible.
Not to mention how slow the PS3's drive is already, how long would it take to read a 400 gig blu ray? Lets not forget about those mandatory installs. What will happen then? Will they go up to 50 or 75 gb for those games on the huge discs?

Yeah.. I've got about 1.2TB of "stuff" myself.. Doesn't make these discs any more useful

How is this true? The casual gamer doesn't want the most bang for their buck? :S
But I agree, these disks are more for archiving and showing off technology than anything. 50GB, ie. dual layer Blu Ray disks alone already provide tons of capacity for game developers to exploit, in which not many companies will be able to fully exploit anyways, with the possbile except for Square Enix, just because RPGs take up so much space :P But I certainly can't see those sports games taking up any more than a dual layer Blu Ray anytime soon.

Doesnt matter when ff7 was released, the point is the difference from CD to DVD, the capacity difference.

MGS4 actually used the whole blu-ray disc, in fact, they had to cut down on some content to get it to fit on one disc. This would be great for the next MGS game (if there is one).

I have my doubts as to whether games on this generation of consoles can utilize 400 GB (while we're on the subject, 2-3 year old consoles are not "NEXT" gen), but a 400GB disc would definitely have legitimate uses in the computer world. That'd be awesome for backup!

Until you scratch it.
Yes, all 16 layers.

Reminds me of what Bill Gates had once said about 640K being more than enough memory anyone would need.

Yes, all 16 layers.
Friggin hate optical media for that. BDs are supposed to be less prone to scratches, but I can't verify that since I actually take care of mine.
There's really no great method to preserving stuff like pictures and video... optical media can scratch or get damaged from heat/sun, hard drives can crash (I thought hard drive crashes were fantasy, until it happened).
