Yeah if you have an extra key, any place that cuts keys can make you a copy. Though if you only had one set of keys and you lost them than you're in trouble - have to go to the dealership and get the number off your lock cylinder and have them cut a new key.

Unless you have a key with a computer chip in it, then you have to go to the dealership...runs min $80 a key.

Yeah but you can get transponder keys for various makes/models relatively cheap on eBay, then go and get gouged for programming. While you still get gouged on one count, at least it's not as bad as having it happen x2.

If you just want a key to get in the car but not start it, you can use a generic key and have it cut anywhere and be fine.

That said, does the 03 Civic even have a transponder/immobiliser option?

Yes (needed a bypass module for my starter install).

I had lost my spare key for my '07 Saturn Sky, which had the chip. I bought a replacement blank key off Ebay for $26 and had it cut at a local locksmith for $2.50. There was no need to visit a dealership. If I remember correctly, all I had to do was use the original key and turn the ignition to "on" for 5 seconds, then quickly do the same thing with the new key. It automatically "learned" the code.

Almost correct, you need to put in the first original key, wait 5 secs... put in the second original key, wait 5 secs and then insert the new one and wait.. you guessed it 5 secs... and your done.

BUT.. if you have lost a key, you can't do it without an original key. It will need to be programmed by the dealership using their computer.

with that specific car (i have the 02) you can't go anywhere to copy the key. since the key has a chip in it, you most probably have to go to the dealership to cut and program to your car.

In my case, I only had the one original key as well as the new one, and it worked as I described. If I'd had two originals, I wouldn't have worried about getting a third. As usual though, as soon as I spent the money to get a second key, the "lost" one showed up.
