Hi RFD's , i really need your help with this thing

I have serious ****ing problem with setting up wireless internet connection for my laptop via the main desktop .

To make this very long miserable story short =

Specs

LAPTOP = Toshiba satellite
DESKTOP = Custom built
ISP = Shaw cable 5MB
CABLE MODEM = Motorola
DISTANCE BETWEEN LAPTOP AND DESKTOP = Less than 15 meters
CONCRETE WALLS = No
SAME FLOOR = Yes

Scenario #1

LAPTOP ADAPTER = Built in adapter
DESKTOP ADAPTER = Linksys WRT54GL
ENCRYPTION = WPA 2
RESULT = Garbage , very unstable , almost no signal whatsoever , extremely slow speed

Scenario #2

LAPTOP ADAPTER = Linksys WUSB54G
DESKTOP ROUTER = Linksys WRT54GL
ENCRYPTION = WPA 2
RESULT = Same **** as #1

Scenario #3

LAPTOP ADAPTER = Linksys WUSB54G \ Built in adapter
DESKTOP ROUTER = D-Link DIR-655
ENCRYPTION = WEP (Wireless G)
RESULT = Same **** as #1 & 2

Scenario #4

LAPTOP ADAPTER = Linksys WUSB54G \ Built in adapter
DESKTOP ROUTER = D-Link DIR-655
ENCRYPTION = WPA 2 (Wireless G+N \ N)
RESULT = Same **** as #1 & 2 & 3

Scenario #5

LAPTOP ADAPTER = D-Link DWA160 Xtreme N
DESKTOP ROUTER = D-Link DIR-655
ENCRYPTION = WPA 2 (Wireless N only)
RESULT = A little bit better than #1 & 2 & 3 & 4 , but still very slow signal (less than 30 ****ing MBPS) , still unstable , very slow download speed

------

It's obviously not hardware problem , because as you can as see , i tried crap load of routers and adapters , including some fancy expensive wireless N stuff

Also the distance between the computers (Less than 15 meters with no concrete walls) is definitely not the problem
**** it , i can get way better signal connection from computers in the NEAR BUILDING , which is easily 150 meters away

so what is the god damn problem here ?

Thanks very much in advance

If you're connected at 30 mbps, and your download speed is slow, that sounds like a problem with your cable connection. 30 mbps leaves plenty of headroom to max out your 5mb connection with Shaw.

First, check your speed by connecting directly to your modem. Do some speed tests, make a note of the results. Power cycle your modem and see if the results change at all. If they do, make a note of them. You should be getting 90% or more of 625 KB/sec down (that is your theoretical maximum).

Second, attach a router, whatever one you have with you. Connect via wire to the router, and do the speed tests again. Do this on both the desktop and the laptop. Make a note of the speeds, they should be the same as (or very close to) the direct connection.

Third, repeat the speed tests with a wireless connection. If you find that there is a difference only with the wireless connection, try the following:

1) Make sure your router has the latest firmware

2) Make sure your adapters have the latest drivers

3) If #1 and #2 don't help, change the channel on your router's WiFi signal, cycling through them all, testing if that makes a difference. Too many devices operate on the 2.4 GHz spectrum, such as cordless phones, microwaves etc. These can all create problems for a wireless signal.

4) Repeat steps with different routers if you have them.

Through this process, you should be able to fix the problem, or at least locate it. Sometimes, it is the building you're in. The last house I was in, I would get a terrible signal. It didn't have concrete or anything either, but maybe some of the building materials had something that interfered. I just moved to a new house, much bigger than that one, and my N router has perfect signal all over, even in the basement. I get 130 Mb connections in the back yard, on the deck... Let us know how it goes!

Also when testing, turn off your security.
