I'm going to convert my old pc into a Server/HTPC

I was wondering what is a good OS and IR reciever (cheap) that i should use for it.

I want quick boot time, and maybe other accessibilities like use it as a web browsers and be able to use the HDs for the network.

Is Linux out of the question? ie: for MythTV or similar? Or are you looking for a MS-Windows solution?

Pretty much every OS around lets you share files on your network in some form or another.

I would figure out what software I'd use and get compatible hardware for it. Mythbuntu (http://www.mythbuntu.org/) looks promising.

Hmm
I have an X-Fi platinum I wanted to moved it to my new pc... but now thinking how this PC is the one that will be the "video" player. I shouldn't move it should I...

Then I will have a IR for it and I also have a tuner, a crappy one tho. not sure if i should just get a new one, quality of the one i have kinda sucks

If you've got Windows on it, then have a look at GBPVR. If you combine that with CoreAVC then you can playback 720p and 1080p on lower speed CPUs.

I don't remember them selling them at that price with remotes just the card and fm antenae for 25. I bought 2 over the last month there were no remotes and just oem boxes. i bought the mce remote which included 2 ir blasters from tiger for 42 bucks.

i use both of my harmony remotes using the pvr150 original remote IR plug (or whatever u call the IR interceptor thingy). just had to select it in the setup of the harmony and it works already.

or u can try buying a USB-Uirt (google it) and teach it the commands

I would say you buy a universal IR receiver, so that you can configure your existing remote(or buy a universal remote) to operate your HTPC, that way you can avoid keeping many remotes to operate your all devices like TV, DVD, Satellite/Cable box, Home theater and HTPC.
