Isn't as cheap as it was before for the mocha colour (149.99) but it's still cheaper than FS or BB....
EDIT: The Champagne one is now 139.99:

How much would it be after price matching FS?
xviperx26
Nov 24th, 2008, 07:14 AM
it needs to be a brick and mortar store to price match at FS/BB not an online store..

Yes, FS does price match Authorized Dealers of online stores.

Thanks op! I missed the $149 deal last week! I would have to take this deal today then!
Btw, does anybody know where I should go to get the best PM? FS or BB? :)

Not sure how easy will be to PM this at BB or FS since they don't have it in this colour (not seeing it on-line at least, but maybe is avail. in store).
However, I had this camera PMed at Staples (Item Number 750079 for $179.82), and used the $20 off $150 coupon for a total of ~$136 plus tax :D

Hi CFRTim, can you tell me how to PM this camera at Staples and use the coupon? I thought the coupon can only be used online(?). Can I go to a Staples store and ask them to PM and just read them the coupon code? (I don't have the actual coupon).
Thanks in advance.

Last time I tried that, they charged that damn $15 delivery charge plus they said I couldn't use the coupon because now it was below $150 total...Are you supposed to wait a while before you PM or something?? What's the protocol...

I did my PM over the phone, and here is how.
Dell price $159, Staples $179.82 ->
(179.82-159)-%10=2.082
159-2.082=156.918 -> this would be the PMed price
156.918-20coupon=136.918 final price before tax
The $20off $150 copun I get weekly in mail email box, and it doesn't say it's for online use only, and I just told him the numbers on it. Also, I did not mention this coupon until the very end when he quoted me the PMed price of $156.92. Shipping is free on orders over $50 before tax
I hope this helps you guys out
Good luck!

Well, I just called them to place the order, but they said they will have to charge me $15 delivery because it is a PM price. Free delivery doesn't apply to Price matching. So, I cancelled. I'll stop by either FS or BB tonight to see what they can do.
Thanks for your help CFRTim! :)

Sorry to hear that, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I still got free delivery.
136.92 +Tax was $154.72, that's what I paid, I even called back to confirm.
Here is what the Staples policy has to say about that:
"For internet and delivered purchases, the competitor’s next day shipping and handling fees will be added to the competitor’s price to make a fair comparison against our price. If no shipping and handling charges are readily available in the advertisement, a flat fee of $15 will be added to the competitor price."
IF is the key word here, but Dell has no shipping fees, and the Staples CSR can check that when looking up Dell.ca and doing the check-out on the product. I guess it depends from CSR to CSR

the coupon code only works once, you need to get your own.
and whoever priced matched it at staples and got to use the coupon is damn lucky.
I tried Thursday and the wonderful guy I got tried repeatedly to convince me that THEIR champagne SD1100 IS was somehow different then Dells, apparently some mystical manufacturers numbers where different, or course only which he could see.
But it got better, apparently they have a dedicated "price match dell" guy at staples, who's only job is to check price matches with dell, and I guess they have instant access to dells inventory because he told me now its out of stock at Dell, literally 5min later.
I was pretty pissed to say the least.
and i have this damn $20 off $150 i wanna use to get a new P&S

Check out the STaples coupon thread on this site and beg for one. People who have them will often PM you a code you can use.

Ahh I see, I did it in another order, I had to apply the coupon first (since people had posted it on the thread and didn't PM it to me (still waiting for coupons of my own)) and so after price match it was below $150 and they were saying that I wasn't allowed to get use it unless I paid over $150 total in products..
Thanks though! Now I know :P.

Just bought this camera last night for $129.99 on the dell website. Amazing deal!! Only problem is that it says "expected ship date: Dec 4".. does that mean it will be arriving by the 4th or shipped out by the 4th?
I need it by the 9th soo.. I hope its the former.. if not I guess ill have to resort to buying it elsewhere and returning it when the one from Dell arrives in the mail?

Dell's shipping is fairly quick... even if shipped out on the 4th, it should be at your doors by the 9th. You could try your luck at price matching with BB or FS stores. Very good chance they will price match it.

Great camera, esp for the price. Still locally lesser canon camera models are 20-40$ more than what I got from dell with free shipping.
Added a 2gb card for $12.95 from Memoryexpress.com and at highest resolution with Fine detail selected I can take 542 pictures.
hope some other people got in on this deal.

Thanks for the tip, I chatted online, then got disconnected, then waited 30 more mins, - got a nice dell rep- who called me back, then gave me the deal.
funny thing is he ordered it as a dell internal order, doesnt show my ship to address or anything yet. just the order number and dell internal part number. doesn't even say what the item is. just $129+tax totals.
But I think I will call him back if I need more stuff from dell in the future for better deals.

My first post!
I tried ordering this morning and the site froze on me. I managed to capture the page that showed the price at $129.99. I spoke with a rep who said that they would look into it and get back to me. They never did. After following up with another rep and getting no where I finally got in touch with the first rep. He said that the price was a marketing error and that he would not give me the discount. I mentioned that other people had received it. He said that those orders will not go through at $129.99. he said they will be corrected within 24 hours. Not sure if this is true or not.
If you do manage to get yours at $129.99 great!

Welcome to RFD,
I was assured by the rep I talked to that I would be recieving the camera at 129.99. But the thing is, I had to show him that I had the item in the cart at 129.99, not just the page showing that it was 129.99
I think as long as you put your order through or have evidence that it was in your cart at that price, you are golden.

Don't forget to download the CHDK add on firmware and have more features such as:
* Optical zoom during video recording
* RAW
* Override Shutter Speeds - go as fast as 1/60.000s or as slow as 64s - you can even sync the flash at these high speeds!
* Override Aperture and Iso
* Add M,Tv & Av modes to cameras that normally don't have it
* Custom Auto-ISO
* Override Focus - you can set focus in millimeters, even when your camera normally has no MF!
* Bracketing - you can use all the aforementioned overrides in bracketing! focus bracketing, ev bracketing, etc, fully customizable!
* Video Overrides - overcome the 1GB or 1hour limit - set custom quality or bitrates (even on the fly DURING recording)
* Scripting - you can write ubasic or LUA scripts and run them on your camera to add even more functionality (this deserves an own wiki alone, it's so powerful!)
* Time Shifting - CHDK allows to zoom during the exposure (normally this works on DSLRS with manual lenses only!) and maybe even focus shifting!
* Motion detection - Yes, high speed motion detection ! ...can be used for a variety of things, e.g. catching lightning or water drops
* Override canon's powersaving
* Edge overlay - ideal for timelapses, stop-motion, stereography and many more occasions
* Custom Curves - apply custom curves to your pictures - in camera!

BE CAREFUL when buying from Dell!
According to their new (maybe old now) policy, there's no price adjustment once the item has shipped, return only! (Before other people jump on me, I was able to get a price adjustment from Dell years ago.)
I bought this camera from Dell when it was $169. I had a feeling they wouldn't adjust the price for me, so I bought another one at $129. And was I right. I called them this morning, and they said no price adjustment, return only--even when it'd save themselves as well from paying extras for the returning shipping, the shipping of the new order, and receiving one extra open box item.
Even Lenovo do price adjustment! So as much as I know many people here hate FS, BB, & StOOpleS, at least you can get price adjustment (in some cases with extra 10% off) there.

yes, the image stabilization is really worth it. I have used both the SD1000 and SD1100IS. It's not going to fix your photo if you're swinging the camera around, but generally you get a better photo, especially in low light when the camera automatically tries to get a longer exposure.

Mine originally said Dec 5th but when I check the status it says something about the item not being availalable and that they will make every effort to get it (or soemthing like that) and the new estimated shipment date is December 8th. My biggest worry is that I don't get it at all. I ordered it at 129 but I stupidly put the shipping address the same as the billing address ( I ship to my mom's address becasue my bldg wont accept large parcels). I was worried that my credit card company would cancel the order because the billing address was wrong. When I phoned Dell to change the billing address, they wanted me to cancel the order and re-order. By that time the price had changed and I told them I wouldn't cancel but that they just had to had to change the billing address. They eventually did it but who really knows what they are going to do?

It's weird - I checked my order status and it says Dec 8th as well and that it's out of stock. But when going to the web site again, it says "ships in 5-7 days" for the champagne model, but for the mocha one it says "temporarily out of stock". So does that mean the champagne one is really out of stock?

Or buy from Dell for $139.99 the Champagne colour camera?
Or Buy from Dell for $149.99 the Blue Colour Camera?

Zoom range or resolution doesn't mean anything about image quality. Also, the IS is also amazing at this price, plus metal housing and Canon image processor. Sure, you can find a $99 Kodak or Fuji but they're nowhere near as good as the Canon.

Ok, but if you want super small you might as well use a camera phone.
It's not smaller by much:
Product Details For 590IS
Product Dimensions: 3.7 x 1.6 x 2.5 inches ; 6.2 ounces (176grams)
Product Details for SD1100
Product Dimensions: 3.4 x 0.9 x 2.2 inches ; 4.5 ounces (128grams)
So it's .3 x .7 x .3 inches bigger, and 48 grams . That's pretty negligible.

I want the best audio quality possible but you don't see me carrying two turntables and a microphone everywhere I go.
Bottom line: for the price you're paying this is a great camera to stuff in a purse or knapsack to take those spur of the moment shots. If you're at a party you're not going to lug around something big and clunky.

Can't we calculate the volume of these as we would boxes? Ie. L x W x H?
590: 14.8 cubic inches
1100: 6.732 cubic inches
This means that the 590IS is more than twice the size of the SD1100IS!

People who cares about image quality should go use SLR. People who cares about portability should go ultracompact. So, I would not say the A series will take better pictures, and people getting the SD1100 are the one who care about how small the camera is (and take decent pics). Don't even mention cell phones as they're all junk compared to any camera.

I was told by one of the store employee that they do not match Dell.ca, some excuss it is shipped from the US.
I had them call customer service at the head office and the person I talk to on the customer service call, verified I should get the price match. I was told Dell.ca is on a list that is price matched. I passed the call to the store employee and I received the price match.

Just a heads up that I refuse to buy the 590IS because it is worse at video recording than the SD1100IS. The 590IS shoots 640x480 video at 20fps, the 1100IS shoots 640x480 video at 30 fps. It is a noticeable difference, especially with fast moving objects or if you slow down the video in post processing.

I don't know. I did exactly the same as you. I could swear when I did the order the billing and shipping address were different but when the order went through they ended being the same address. In any case, I'm not sure what you should do. I got an acknowldgment letter right away which I usually get from Dell when I placed an order. that makes me believe that the credit card payment was accepted. I guess you could phone Dell and just ask them to advise you. They seemed reluctant to change my billing address and just wanted me to cancel and reorder. I told them I didn't want to do it that way and they finally gave in. And actually now I am thinking I should phone my credit card company to see if any charges went through.

DSLRs aren't exactly small or pretty, but they are the best cameras.
Actually the most important number for photo quality is not even mentioned in most camera specifications: it's "pixel density". If you head over to a pro camera review site like http://www.dpreview.com you will see it listed prominently as one of the 3 headline specifications for every camera. That's the number of megapixels divided by the actual CCD sensor size. SLRs have big CCD sensors with a low pixel density. Cheap pocket cameras have small CCD sensors = high pixel density = lots of image noise, poor dynamic range and poor low-light performance.
For example:
Canon 1100IS = 32 Mpixel/cm2 pixel density
Canon A590IS = 32 Mpixel/cm2 pixel density
Canon EOS 1000D = 10.1 Mpixel/cm2 pixel density
The Canon 1100IS is great camera for the size, and it does the best job it can with a very small CCD sensor. But the photo quality is not in the same league as an SLR. The small CCD sensor means lots of image noise at higher ISOs, along with clipped highlights and fuzzy shadow areas due to poor dynamic range. These things won't bother you for casual snapshots, but you would want a better camera for high quality photos.

It also took QUITE the tumble (out of someones hand onto tiles down a few stairs.... and I swear not ONE scratch. Works perfectly (it fell when the camera was on). It past the durability test last night too loll. Highly recommend this camera esp. if you can get it PM'ed

Bought the SD1000 last year and it's a great camera. We use it to make videos of my son to put on youtube (he plays guitar), and for the size and price it does a great job!

The Canon SD1000 and Canon SD1100 are quality cameras that are MADE IN JAPAN, unlike many other point and shoot cameras of the same price range.
See the many postive reviews before making such an ignorant statement.
And the SD1100IS is available at all Future Shops for $149.99 this week in all colours.

The MIJ point is moot, it may have been "made" (assembled? where do the other parts comes from?) elsewhere with equal or higher quality control
Dont get my wrong, this ELPH is well built and is a excellent camera, but nowaday, I don't even look at where it's made when it comes to electronics...

Observe a factory in china, then observe a factory in Japan, and you wouldn't say the same thing again.

Wow. Look at all those people paying $400 for a D40: they must be idiots as well for paying that much for a 6MP camera.

I've never been to either, but even if I did, not all factories are equal. You get what you pay for, if Canon choose to save cost, cameras made in Japan may even be crappier due to higher labor cost.
Some peoples promote local business and Made in Canada items, but the same item made overseas can be of higher quality due to lower wages.
MEC for example have thier more complex gears made overseas to save cost and bring higher quality products to us while still keeping an eye on who to do business with, ethical sourcing as they call it.
An high end backpack for example, made in Canada, will cost twice as much.
Canon have plants in Japan, USA, Taiwan, China and Malaysia, it doesn't matter where it's made as long as it's a Canon. If it was designed cheap, it will be cheap.
Sure there's plently crappy china made products but there's also state of the art, modern factories that export high end electronics, if you're ready to pay the price.
Not to mention, what exactly does it mean when it says "Made in XX" when all the other parts comes from elsewhere in a century of globalization.
How much work is actually done by human? If most of the production line is automated, then human induced error is of lesser consern.
Departement stores sells bikes "Made in Canada" but it's only assembled here, Raleigh for example, to get around import tax for whole bicycles made in China, import them in pieces.
This have been debated over and over in another thread which I can't find, but you get the idea...
See this for example:

We just received this official word from Canon:
Manufacturing of the PowerShot S5 IS digital camera is currently carried out at two Canon factories, one in Japan and the other in China. The main reason for this is that worldwide demand for this model is extremely high, and the use of two factories helps Canon to increase its total manufacturing capacity, thereby accelerating the delivery of cameras to our customers. Our digital camera factory in China is called Canon Zhuhai, Inc., and it is located in Guangdong province on the Chinese mainland, not far from Hong Kong. Canon Zhuhai was established in 1990, and it produces not only compact digital cameras but also Canon laser beam printers, multifunction printers, and contact image sensors used in Canon scanners and multifunction devices. It is a thoroughly modern and up-to-date facility, and it is a proud member of the worldwide Canon group of companies.
PowerShot cameras manufactured at the Canon Zhuhai factory use exactly the same components, inside and out, as PowerShot cameras manufactured in Japan. Other than the country of origin nameplate on the bottom of the cameras, there is no difference whatsoever between the cameras we manufacture in Japan and the cameras we manufacture elsewhere, including those made at the Canon Zhuhai factory.

Check out NCIX once in a while, sometimes they have SD cards at like 4.99 and then you can PM them for an extra 2 dollars off or so and get it for 2.99 lol. That's what I did for a microSD once.
