Only a 4200rpm drive inside so for those thinking that they will get one of these to take the drive out and upgrade their laptop with, it's worth noting.

Would be perfect as-is though, as an external drive.

According to the flyer it is a 5400RPM drive

http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/storage/hdd/mobile/mhz2500bt-sata.html

It's 4200rpm but on the page linked above, Fujitsu claims that, "Its performance is competitive with the 5,400 RPM 3-platter HDDs, while offering advantages of lower power consumption and whisper quiet operation."

As per other thread, it's a 12.5mm drive, and may not fit some laptops.

safe wager, 99.00 is already under 100 now.Prudence is a virtue these day. :)

I'll qualify it a little more:
-there will be a bigger selection of HD's (other than fujitsu) for <$100
-some will be 5400 RPM, possibly 7200 RPM
-some may actually fit a laptop

would the hdd inside work/fit in either the ps3 or xbox360?

It should work in the PS3 although you may want to look at something faster (7200 rpm) in a 2.5 in size. Heat and power are not a problem with the PS3. As for the 360, as far as I know, you have to use MS's proprietary drives.

Don't forget it's 12.5mm not 9.5mm won't fit in many laptops.

The default drive that comes in the PS3 is 5400 RPM in speed. Most tests I've read online show that the benefit of a 7200 RPM drive is miniscule, and the bottleneck is still the Blu-ray drive read speeds.

will 12.5mm be a problem for PS3? Normally 2.5" drive is 9.5mm as others have posted. I don't own a PS3 right but plan to in the next year, and at that time would definitely look at putting a bigger drive in and taking the PS3 drive out as external HDD.

Currently I am eyeing the new Segate 5400.6 500gb but if this drive fits the bill I may jump on it.

To answer my own questions directly.
Drive will not fit in ps3 due to 12.5mm height.
Drive will not work in 360 due to security signature.
It would work with both systems as external media storage.

Just to let people know, they've gotten a restock of this now. It's "available" online, but you have to sign up on an email waiting list. It's available at the store too, but they're running out.

I signed up on the 1st email waiting list and managed to pick it up from the Markham location. The drive looks slick and great with the leather case.

I'd be worried about how this enclosure protects against shock damage. Would be fine if you want to keep it stationary, but you get a 2.5" laptop hard drive like this for a reason...

The enclosure is not Fujitsu's (HandyDrive-III). So it is not the same as Fujitsu 500GB Ext Retail (HandyDrive-III). It looks like they use OEM Fujitsu 500GB 2.5" bulk and install the hard drives into closures by someone else.

That's what I was thinking. Received mine yesterday (BTW - SIG offered me great customer service to make sure it arrived in time).
Nice enclosure, though - mostly metal.

A few more observations:
The drive is preformatted in NTFS. Reformat was necessary for me so that I could use it on OS-X, Linux and Windows machines.

The drive requires two USB ports to give it power, and you'll have to use the proprietary cable for that (only one port on the enclosure, but Y-cable included). That, or find an external power adapter. That's a little inconvenient since my powerbook has only one USB port on either side, and the Y-cable is too short to reach across both sides. :|

Not so... I've had mine for about two weeks and I use a generic USB cable on a single computer USB port. In fact, I have yet to uncoil or use the cable that came with the drive.

I suspect that your USB ports likely don't have enough power to power the hard drive. Make sure that you're not using a USB hub, or at least use a powered USB hub.

Thus far, mine works fine on all of the computers and laptops that I've hooked the drive up to.

It's sometimes based on enclosure also. I have many seagate drives and they only require 1 USB port for power.

Well, just re-tested. On the desktop a straight USB cable does it. On the Powerbook G4, the Y-cable is needed.

Sooo, YMMV

Mine usb WD HDD from Costco with Dell laptop needs a powered usb hub, it can not start with a single usb connection. The drive keeps spining and then stopped.

Just went to SIG to get the Fujitsu 320GB portable drive which was on sale earlier, anyone bought this and used it yet? Its kind of weird that the drive shows (WDC WD32 00BEVT-00ZCT0). Does that mean the drive inside is not a Fujitsu? seems it is like a western digital name.

Anyone can answer me please?

Fujitsu provides the packaging, WD the engine, and its labeled Fujitsu. Happens often with other electronics including TV's for example.

Well the 320GB was only on sale until today, the 17th, hopefully when I go back on Friday, it'll be possibly the same price and in stock in Richmond Hill.
They don't take credit card when you go to their store to purchase? Anyone know?
Since I work right by there, I might as well just buy it from there instead of paying $10 to ship.

Sorry to bring this thread alive again but I need some help....as well as buyer beware on this.

I purchased this from SIG and it's faulty, they will not replace it telling me its manufacture warranty only. I have contacted Fujitsu Canada and US and Canada have advised me that they do not make this product, and US have advised that it is not there product.

Can anyone advise if they have had any problems with this drive because right now I have no support from anyone, and help would be great, Thanks.

What are the symptoms? As for manufacturer's warranty I suspect Fujitsu CA/US only provides support for the drive itself (model has been mentioned on the first page and is listed on Fujitsu's site) as the enclosure is not likely from Fujitsu and reason why they rejected your inquiry?

It's toast, soon as it's plugged in it spins up and then just clicks and is not recognized. So I have to pull the drive out of the enclosure and check warranty on the hard drive it self, and get then RMA'd? Guess I'll have to give that a try, bottom line is SIG is one of the worst to deal with and I will never buy from them again, customer service is not in their vocabulary at all!

I can't remember why but I remember SIG telling me when encountering problems to go through them and they will exchange it. I suspect since they are completely sold out now that it's just easier to brush you off to deal with the manufacturer.
I had external drives fail on me before and I just took the drive out to claim directly with the manufacturer as the internal harddrive warranty tends to be longer than that of the external drive.
