Hi,
Did a search and didn't see this anywhere. Picked up a Rogers 4250HD box for 99.99 (while quantities last) at the Sony store in the Eaton's Center. There were two signs: 1 said the 4250hd was 99.99 and the other said the 3250hd was 99.99. I Asked the salesperson for the 4250 and got one. They had about 6 left (2 were open box) in their stockroom at around 3:00pm. I believe the PVR unit is selling for 299.99. No TV purchase necessary. I activated my box (took about 15-20 minutes) and it's working fine.

Just to be clear.
You still need to pay monthly for all these HD channels right?
Because I see these things sell for almost $500 and it's rediculous

That would be the PVR.
This is a SMOKIN' deal. I cannot even touch that at TSCC...

Yes, you'll have to pay an extra $3/mth digital service charge.

LOL, these posts are hilarious.
1) If you already have HD cable, then you'll pay nothing extra, assuming you have the open coax hookup.
2) If you just have an SD box, then yes, you'll need to pay for the HD channel basics, and any extras you want, but will have HD channels for free if you subscribe to Movie Network, Sports Packs, etc.
3) If you have no digital box and just use basic cable to your TV, and you buy one of these for SD+HD, then get ready to open your wallet wide and let Rogers take a big bite.

Yes, you get all the major networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, CTV, CBC, CITYTV, etc) in HD if you have digital cable. You don't pay any "HD" charge.
If you want additional channels in HD like TLC, Discovery, Showcase, etc, and want timeshifting on the major HD networks, there's a $8.95 "HD pack" available. If you don't want to pay this, you can still watch these channels in Standard Def.

iirc, i think you do need to pay for a digital service fee... if you had been using SD terminal and now buys an HD terminal - for $3. But but, my parents are claiming that the HD stb produces better SD results, judging from ch.36... the crappiest SD of all channels... :)

no, installation should be free what so ever - even if they are asking for a fee, you shouldn't need much effort to get that waived. It has been free when i jump from SD to HD, it has been free when I add an additional retail HD stb. Installation is just like... plugging in the cable. Unless you are having signal problems and need a technician to look at the wires, that service has ALSO been free for me as well.

basically this is the most convoluted pricing i've ever seen.
digital service fee is for digital STBs whether HD or SD.
there is no HD fee although you have to subscribe to a certain package of SD channels in order to get the HD channels for free.
there are some HD channels that you have to pay for in order to get all ~40 HD channels rogers offers.
at the end of the day, you have to pay for a bunch of (SD) channels you won't be watching... (once you go HD you won't go back)... you can't cancel those SD channels because that's the only way you'll get those HD channels for "free". if you cancel those SD channels, the HD channels go with them. even though you have those SD channels, and the equivalent HD channels come for free, there are still some HD channels you have to pay for.
had i known all this ahead of time i may have chosen not to buy a HDTV. but once you have HDTV, you have to get HD... or else what was the point of spending ~$1000 on a new TV if you can't use it to its potential.
one last thing - just cuz your HDTV is 1080p doesn't mean you will see pictures in 1080p. Most channels are 720p and some are 1080i. No such thing as 1080p yet unless you do OTA.

If you don't currently have a box unless they have a freebie promo going on. When we bought a 4250, we took the rental 3250 (free rental at the time) to a Rogers Video store and turned it in. Hooked up the 4250 and had to call to tell them the 3250 was returned, they had to check the system and then could activate the 4250. The only time we had a Rogers guy come over was when we first hooked up with Rogers and during their freebie hookup promo. My husband called Rogers ahead of time to make sure he could just swap out the boxes himself.
We got our box at the Source during Father's Day Sale.

That pretty much sums it up. I think Bell and Starchoice are the same (you have to subscribe to the SD channel if you want the HD one). Regular analogue cable just wasn't good enough for my new TV (Samsung LN40A450).

That's exactly why I bought a 720P TV. BTW, I watched WWE on SportsNet HD (1080i), one of the "free" HD channels, and it was stunning!!

This isn't exactly correct, you get some HD channels with those bundles but if you want all the hd channels available you have to buy another package. I think it's called the HD channel pack.....
BTW: is the 4250 dual tuner model? I ask because I have built a HE computer and hauppage has an HDTV card that will allow you to record HD tv onto the computer's HDD. I currently have an HDPVR that is free from rogers that is up in June next year. If the 4250 is dual tuner I could still record one program and watch another......
Edited: just went to the SA website and nope, not dual tuner model so you can't record one and watch another. I guess that's what the DHD 4250 is for ......

Thanks for the post and the follow ups though.
I'm looking for a new HDTV around Boxing Day, and want an HDPVR. Currently renting a SD PVR from Rogers, with a dual tuner.
Does the last post mean the $99 one that can be picked up as mentioned by the OP has a single tuner, not a dual?

The 4250 AFAIK is _not_ a PVR of any kind, it is just a digital HD set top box that lets you tune to the HD channels.
The 8300HD is the model you're looking for lone_palm, and you can get that for free from rogers if you check the retention thread / "how to get a hd pvr for free.."

If you don't have the VIP package (which AFAIK includes up to 4 extra outlets) then you may have to pay for an extra outlet. I had digital basic at one point and wanted to add another digital box and the system wouldn't allow it as there's officially only one outlet register in their system.

Heartland Mississauga only has 3250 left. Square One Mississauga has both or had at noon today.
If you don't have VIP, you pay an extra $6.99 that allows up to 3 more boxes.
Some 3250s have issues with sound. A channel will go mute and the only way you can get it to "un" mute is to switch to another channel then back again. I haven't had this problem with the 4250 that I have.

Unless you hook it up to your computer. You can't record HD though, only through Rogers PVRs. I have a 90 SD hooked up to my computer and use a Hauppauge tv tuner. Along with their ULEAD DVD Movie Factory I can edit out commercials and make a nice menu for the shows I keep and watch others through Media Player. We did have the VCR hooked up at first but the recordings were just awful looking. When I want to watch HD I watch that show live anyway. But there's several shows in SD like re-runs of Road to Avonlea so recording in HD isn't I want so this works for me. Even these SD recordings are way clearer than when I was recording off of a VCR and a tube tv.

Successful PM at Bestbuy today. Got it for $85. I'm not sure I'm going to keep it because I have a year left on my free HDPVR, but I got a gift receipt good until Jan 5 to decide. I'm thinking of getting a second HDTV so if any great deal comes up over the boxing day season, I'll be set.
The way I got the PM was by going to the Sony store and taking a photo of the display with my cell phone. I showed it to the BB cashier and the manager and he approved it without even bothering to call.

I figured my local BB would say this too, but I was going to try and use the response that it was an in-store advertisement as witnessed by my cell-phone photo. Feeble response, but the policy doesn't state where the advertisement has to be.
The Policy states: ...should you find a lower advertised price, including those on the internet from an authorized Canadian Dealer, we will match that price and beat it by giving you an additional 10% of the difference.
...Simply present us with your original Best Buy or BestBuy.ca sales receipt, along with proof that the item you bought is being advertised at a lower price. Once our staff verifies that the item is in stock and available for immediate sale and delivery at the advertised price, you will receive your refund.
It should be a legit PM.

No, there are nothing wrong with those channels right now. Are you getting just a blank screen or the unauthorized message? A blank screen means your cable signal level is too weak or too strong.

Add a coaxial cable signal booster if you have one sitting around. Try unhooking all the cable splitters you have between where the cable enter the house and your HD box, that should allow you to test out the box.

Are these units from Sony Store sealed (brand new)??...I went to pick one up however, however all the units they had (in the 4250 model) didn't have that circle-shaped sticker that sealed the box (there's usually a number to call to activate and a spot to put the dealer code)......So I opened one up and some of the cables weren't packaged and the AC cord looked extremely used with dust and discoloured labels.

They said they have been getting a lot of people coming in trying to PM the 4250. Their argument was that BB PM policy excludes limited time or quantity items.
Tried Fairview, cannot find the Ad anywhere. Ask a salesman and they said they are OOS.
Gave Yorkdale a call, at 5:10pm, they said they are OOS as well.

Add a coaxial cable signal booster if you have one sitting around. Try unhooking all the cable splitters you have between where the cable enter the house and your HD box, that should allow you to test out the box.
i don't think we have any splitters and the hdtv is sitting in the basement so i wouldn't be able to test it out where the cable enters the house.
would i need to put the signal booster to the cable where it comes out of the wall jack and into the hd terminal? is there a specific signal booster you would recommend?

Damn....so BB won't PM anything that is on sale...only reg. priced items as most sales are limited time (i.e., a week)
We just can't win can we?

Just want to be clear on this.
I currently have analog Rogers Cable up to channel 60 (I think), including the chinese channel 36.
If I buy an HD box, install it myself and pay nothing more, what do I get out of the HD box? I assume that would give me HD channels for CBC, CTV, OMNI, etc?
And the rest of my channels up to 60 would be in standard definition?
So I would be paying $99.99 for hi-def version of around 10 channels?

You're switching to digital so there's usually a $2.99 fee associated with that. You'd be getting time-shifting channels as well as the TV guide features....
As for the the rest of your assumptions...pretty much right.

yeah, you get whatever SD channels you subscribe to, plus 16 or 17 HD channels that yo get for free. All you do is get the HD terminal, connect it to your hdtv and call rogers to activate it.

Mine had the circle shaped sticker and everything was still packed up.Got it at Square One store.

If you sign up for Basic Digital Cable you won't be getting the Chinese Channel unless you pay extra. I have Basic and don't get that. I do get two OMNI channels in HD. The big Canadian and USA networks will be in HD. You will also get timeshifting channels so if you miss a show at 9 you can catch it at 10 . There'll be several CTV channels. Just go above 105 and all of those channels will come up. If you want to surf just the HD channels that's 500 and above. There is a lot more to look around for. So it's worth it to go digital and of course the much clearer picture :)

You can still probably get the analog Chinese channel after you activate your box, as they are usually too lazy to send anyone out to cut you off, especially after they think you are on digital now.

The difference is not huge, but noticeable even on my 22" LCD. The image is sharper on HDMI, and on a news station like CP24, the text is much crisper.
Order a HDMI cable from monoprice for $5, it will serve you well.

I then asked the employee to show me the promotion flyer, he did and i took a picture with iphone. i also got a snap shot of the deal on their computer monitor (when he rang it up).
I took my images and headed over to Futureshop and Price matched plus less 10 % of the difference.

To be honest, time is money, if wanted me to spend 20 mins for PM a single item, that is too expensive. Well, it is not a first time I saw HD box on sale for $100, it means in the future you may find the same deals. Also, it is just a regular HD box not PVR. If the persons can spend more than $1000 for the HDTV, y not spend other $200 sthg on the digital box. I will not like a begger to ask FS/BB to PM.

some people are cheap
some people make a hobby out of "scoring" a great deal
some people earn next to no income so their opportunity cost is low
some people turn around and sell these things for a profit, sometimes right here on RFD
all these types exist on RFD, sometimes within one person.

$15 for 20 mins "work". That's $45 an hour he "made". If $45/hr savings is "chump change" to you that isn't worth it, all the power to you. Everyone has times of the day where they basically have nothing better to do. It's not always the case where someone would rather be working or even has the ability to choose to earn more than $45/hr. In fact, just by posting your reply, you've wasted time. Don't you know that time is money? Why do you spend valuable time posting on message boards?

The whole basic idea of this website, is to save a buck or two, although I think I have spent more money since I have been on this site. But it's money well spent!
It's not like you are saving 15-25%, you are getting it for more than half the price.

Normally it's difficult to see. However, HDMI keeps the video in digital format whereas component cables transmit in analog and it's converted back to digital within your TV.

The first person helping said ok, then another guy said they are not allowed to do it with the PVR, then comes another dude checking their computer saying all the other stores are doing the same promotion as they are(PVR-$499 or $299+ a TV set) and i must of got it with a TV(they are accusing me of trying to cheat on them) All Ive said then was to tell him to simply just call the store number on the receipt and ask, do a price check as they usually do. They refuse and said they(sony) must of made a mistake and sold it to you alone. I repeated myself, why not just call them right now and ask. easy as that. Then finally they came up with the best come back they could thought of --if its cheaper there then why dont you just buy it there--

Then I headed off to Heartland Sony store and he said they don't have stock of either the HD's or PVR's but you CAN pre-order and they will call you when it arrives. He said the sale is on until December 14, after confirming it in his system.

Yep the 3250 is very buggy indeed. When changing channels the audio doesn't sync in time. The audio will come in at about 7 seconds later. Or you're forced to change to another channel then come back to the channel before it.
Save the hassle and get the 4250, atleast with that you have the option to use HDMI in the future or not.

basically this is the most convoluted pricing i've ever seen.
digital service fee is for digital STBs whether HD or SD.
there is no HD fee although you have to subscribe to a certain package of SD channels in order to get the HD channels for free.
there are some HD channels that you have to pay for in order to get all ~40 HD channels rogers offers.
at the end of the day, you have to pay for a bunch of (SD) channels you won't be watching...
I get a bunch of basic HD channels for free, on the most basic of basic cable plans (CBC, Fox, etc. etc.), you don't need any special SD packages to get that much and that's enough for me.

If you don't have the VIP package (which AFAIK includes up to 4 extra outlets) then you may have to pay for an extra outlet. I had digital basic at one point and wanted to add another digital box and the system wouldn't allow it as there's officially only one outlet register in their system.
correct .... If you have a box already and call to add a new one unles you are on some "vip plan" you will be charged $6.99 a month extra for a "extra outlet"....:(

Hassles?? What hassles?? I have no time to bother with downloading TV episodes to a HTPC. THAT is a hassle. That's 10 times the hassle of a PVR.
I write this as I watch the Raptor game "pseudo-live". I'm a few minutes behind because I had to rewind a monster Bosh dunk earlier in the game. I'll skip the commercials at some point to get back to "actual" live (just did). Good luck with that on the 4250. Or pausing to answer the phone. Or finding a live HD feed of the game online. If I go away on vacation, or the weekend, I record everything I might have a remote interest in watching later. I knew within half an hour of using the PVR for the first time I'd never watch TV again without it.

I picked up an HDPVR from my cableco a couple of weeks ago.. they were going to charge me $20 for installation.. i mean seriously.. charge for installation? The only thing i needed to do was connect the coax, and then the HDMI cable from PVR to TV.

One thing i noticed when the guy rang in the 4250 on the receipt it comes up as the 3250. I asked the store clerk to open up the box to confirm that the 4250 was actually in the box and it was. He gave me some excuse telling me that Rogers is probably using the 3250 boxes and just place a small little 4250 sticker on the box. Anyone else come across this? Going to make it difficult to price match with FutureShop with 3250 printed on the receipt :(

You also have a years warranty on it. They should be giving you the correct information on the receipt otherwise how can you use the warranty if your box dies in the first year? Mine has the correct 4250 on it.

Not sure if it's BS, but I've spoken to 2 different Rogers reps and they both confirmed that warranty on these boxes are done through Rogers and the 1 year starts on the day it's activated. I'm assuming they can tell based on the Serial number (SAB_ _ _ _ ...) what model you have.

You could likely ***** and complain to Rogers and threaten to switch to Bell and they would give you a free 2 year rental on this one of the better HD PVR.
There are enough posts on retention bundles people are getting.
To me it sounds silly to pay $230 for something you may be able to get free...

Seems to be hit an miss with the free rental of the PVR.
In my case I have had HD since it came out in my area and have had some type of HD box for the past 5 years or so. The minute the PVR box came out I renteded it from Rogers. I have been renting it all that time and could not justify the 499.00 price tag of it. With the 299.00 price I went out yesterday and got the PVR model that I am renting as well as a 4250 for future use on other hdtv once I get that.
I spent a lot of money on the rental over the years and now in a year the box will pay for itself and will not have to worry about free rentals, rental fees, price increase in rental. I am not planning to switch to another company so purchasing the pvr made dollar sense to me and will benefit me in the long run.
As for you buying I do not know how long you have rented, if you are going to stay with Rogers. If you are thinking of getting one for free I would contact them and see if that is possible. If it is not you can go and purchase one of these for 299 or 99 depending on what features you want. I could not pass up the $99.00 for an extra HD box.
By the way thanks OP and the London WhiteOaks store has a few 4250 )with more coming) and a couple of the PVR's left. Like mentioned I picked up one of each. :)

FYI, FS has been accepting PM with Sony.
There must an over-supply of these PVRs........ because:
People just don't bother with what Rogers is charging them rents thinking its a regular fee anyway.
People just think those devices are too technical for them to know what to do - so why bother buying it?
People think that package they have with Rogers is a good one, and thinking if they buy a PVR, it could raise their monthly fees.

HD 8300 has been around for a while. Over-supply of these old PVRs?
True :)

I'm surprise no mentioned this yet: Rogers is about to get a new model. The 8300HD has been around for years, it's about time for a refresh. Btw, that's just a rumour that I've heard for some time now, but nothing official.

In that case, it's YMMV with PMing FS.
If an FS location is situated in an RFD-infested community, best bet is that they have armed themselves to the bone with anti-RFD ordnance.
Sorry, I could not think any better words in this observation.

They're ******** there. They refuse even perfectly legitimate PMs (which this one is, but I'm talking about ones that the rest of the world would think are indisputable, they dispute).
So to "get them back", any BB returns I have I return to that store to screw up their numbers, which in turn affect how quickly Supervisors/Managers get promoted. They're shooting themselves in the foot. Oops.

5 years of renting cost $1500. Even at $499, that was only a year and eight months of renting. At this price ($299), renting is nothing short of stupid. Rogers needs to reduce the rental charge because it's simply unreasonable. In the long run, they would make more money anyway. More people would be willing to try it out on a rental for $10-15 and then would likely end up buying it. Once you own the hardware you are much less likely to go to satellite. Higher customer retention allows them to screw us with ever higher cable bills. Oops, hope I didn't give them any ideas...

Well, that is your life style with PVR and it works out great for you. Sorry, it ain't for me. My LCD TV is connected to a HTPC with all the network drives. I just download whatever I missed to another PC via NZB. After I finished my supper, washing dishes and bath...etc, all the downloaded shows are ready for my viewing :D On my TV, I select the "source" button to HTPC, a keystroke away and I am watching the missed commercials free shows :D I have no time to fcuk around with the PVR buttons and scheduling...etc. Just let the professionals do the PVR for me ;)
God, I love this information age
Did you download the basketball game too? Hockey game? Football game?Live? In HD? I watch very few TV shows because they're mind numbingly boring. I do watch a lot of sports though and use the PVR during every game. Anyway, all that downloading and waiting is WAYYYYY more of a hassle, and obviously, a lot more expensive than a $299 PVR box.

I'm wondering what the benefit is to owning one of these?
You could likely ***** and complain to Rogers and threaten to switch to Bell and they would give you a free 2 year rental on this one of the better HD PVR.
There are enough posts on retention bundles people are getting.
To me it sounds silly to pay $230 for something you may be able to get free...
I just called Rogers up and got them to make my existing SD PVR free for 2 years, as well as getting an extra HD PVR free for 2 years. If you guys are out of luck in finding any of the boxes to buy, I suggest you consider calling Rogers.

this is the reason why i don't believe in buying the STBs anymore. one or two (three at most) calls to Rogers will likely end up with credits that waive the cost of the STBs.
it's been over 12 months and i have yet to pay a dime for my HD STB. they rather give you STB for free on a 6-month / 12-month basis and ENSURE that you will subscribe to their HD signal for that duration.

Rogers boxes only work with Rogers Cable. When you authorized the box it is linked to the account that you have authorized it with. So you can't take your box to a friend's house and hook it up to watch hockey in HD. You would have to invite your friend over to your house.

I have a 4250HD hooked up to my Dell computer that runs Vista. Though I've had problems with Media Centre so use the tuner card's scheduler instead. I haven't had any problems with my box yet. This was hooked up about a month or so ago. It does sound like you have a problem with the box. You should have a one year warranty on it and should be able to get it replaced.
Before I had a 940SD but it had problems and would get stuck on BBC Kids or BBC Canada (most not like Birtish shows). When this deal came along went out and got a 4250 for the computer PVR and put the 940 with our old CRT tv that's in the basement so the kids can watch the kid channels.

it is possible to take your HD box for viewing at a friend's house, IF:
1. they are a rogers cable tv customer
2. there are no filters on their cable tv signal
3. they live in the same neighbourhood / jurisdiction as you (if you live in ex-Shaw area and your friend is in Rogers then it won't work)

because you can only rip off rogers once.
for the other HDTVs in your house, you would need additional HD STBs. Unless you want to disconnect and carry your HD box from your living room to your bedroom to watch before going to sleep.
you could also activate up to 4 HD boxes for free if you have the VIP program. This means you could scam rogers by adding HD boxes for your neighbours who are also Rogers TV customers or Rogers Internet customers and they can pay you for HD services.

MCE 2005 has an option to record extra minutes on all of your recordings, so you don't have to keep manually extending the length.
The guide data is much more accurate, and it gives you two weeks of info. It also has much better info about movies too. It's a much better PVR than Robbers. Too bad it's not HD though, and the quality isn't as sharp. And as mentioned, you get a black screen if the box turns itself OFF.

i know this from experience.
thank you.
also, filters are really easy to take off, just have to locate the box on the side of your house...

filtersboxes are on the side of the house, if your house is less than about 20 years old, chances are your filter is in a common box somewhere on your street along with everyone else's cable.

It's also illegal to tamper with your cable box.
