I have opened up a small business and will be providing a certain service to small and medium businesses.
The money for the service will be received on weekly/bi-weekly basis. Given that, I can't make use of invoices. Can I send receipts
for the money received or is there a more common practice currently used?

i would just give a receipt for the service provided everytime you receive payment. My wife runs a daycare and gets paid monthly, when she receives a payment she give a receipt from a receipt book she bought at walmart.
If you want it to look more professional just download a receipt template for word or something and use that.

My mother does the exact same thing, gives a receipt from the receipt book she bought for her daycare business.

I invoice weekly... not a problem. But a simple receipt book will work if the people already know the amount each week and will be bringing you cash & cheques.
You can buy them receipt books and invoice books at Staples, Office Depot, Grand & toy etc.

If you need to write a lot of these, I'd prefer some computer invoice system. I hate to have any repetitive tasks :)
