Hi all, I came across this T.V. on sale.
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926HDS0010094208&catid=23249&logon=&langid=EN
Sure, it's only a 720p T.V., but reasonable for the price, I think.
What about you guys? Would you recommend?
Oh, sorry I think it's for the week though... Oups

at the risk of a flame war, what's wrong with plasma? I thought they were supposed to have better blacks and a more film/CRT-like look compared to LCD...

Nothing wrong with plasma, some might even argue the picture look more natural than a LCD. What's wrong is the brand of 'TV', Insignia.

Any word on if they screwed up again and are offering the 1080p model?

LMAO Insignia, I wouldnt even pay $7.99 for this piece of junk. Get a tv folks, a REAL tv, not a disposable piece of plastic.

Here's what Comsumer Reports had to say about this TV in there latest issue.
It would have been nice to post the whole page but i don't know how.
Insignia NS-PDP50
CR's Take
This 50-inch 720p Insignia (Best Buy's store brand) represents a notable value, with very good overall picture quality--though a step below the best sets--and a very low price.
Highs
Picture quality with DVDs was excellent; it was very good with HD and SD programs. Contrast was generally very good, giving images depth and dimension. Black levels were generally good, though a bit bright on the darkest scenes. Very good reproduction of scenes with subtly shaded light-to-dark areas. Colors were very accurate with HD programs and DVDs. With HD content, images were very bright, making this TV a fine choice for daytime viewing. Very good sound.
Lows
With HD programs, dark scenes were slightly lacking in contrast. This TV does not have an effective high-definition film-mode and exhibits typical jagged edges--"jaggies"-- in movies and other film-based content. Images in general looked a bit grainy. Has two HDMI inputs, one fewer than many sets.

Nothing, as long as you don't play a lot of games on them, and with TV viewing, have a lot of patience for image retention. I admit drinking the plasma Haterade, but for good reason, as I play games, watch movies, view TV, and have no patience for the "persistent images" of plasma TVs.
Plus, plasma is is being phased out long-term, and I don't think anyone (not even Panasonic?) is actively pursuing any new plasma designs.

So the last sale was a screwup? Hard to believe Bestbuy would screwup on something so major and widely advertised.

Hmmm....Thats odd, I play A LOT games, watch TONS of movies and view TV much more than the average user and have never had any of these problems...Do you own a newer plasma by chance?
As for pursuing new plasma designs and plasmas being "phased out" long term, OLED's are going to "phase" both technologies out so it really doesn't matter "long term".
I think maybe you bought an LCD and are trying to justify your decision? Not that there is anything wrong with LCDs....

Although I don't have anything against Insignia I suspect we'll see 50" 720p tv's from brand names like LG as we get closer to x-mas/boxing day.
Part of me even wonders if this set will go down to $600 during that time frame.

LOL, yeah that's the ticket.
I just don't like plasma, new or old, other than for watching high-def movies. I absolutely despise image retention, and no matter the brand, you will get it with some TV channels and many games. I just HATE watching a TV show with the outline of another showing, even if it goes away in an hour or so.
Life's too short, and I've returned plasma "deals" because I was watching TV with my game dials/borders still in plain view and I hated it.
It's not what's "better" or "worse" for all people, it's what I like and don't like.

Oh, there are going to be tons of 720p deals between now and Boxing Day, especially as companies try to get rid of plasma stocks, but 1080p at 47" or higher demand will still be strong and the CAD exchange will be weak, so to envision a $600 47" 1080p for $600 is really a pipe dream. Maybe 10 units at BD, but not regular.
US prices are higher than CAD now, and most see Canadian LCD price levels rising significantly, and easily higher than current US levels.

For anyone interested, I have 2 fairly modern plasmas (42" 1080p Panasonic and 50" 1080p Insignia). I use them to watch SD TV and play PS3 exclusively, and have never had image retention while watching TV. There have been moments when the TV is warming up that I have caught image retention on the pitch black PS3 menu screen, but that is it and never in games.

Oh man, I'd LOVE to take some XBOX360 FPS games over to your house and play them for an afternoon straight on your plasma, then watch your face turn grey.
