Do you save takeout containers? If so, which ones?

I usually keep the durable sushi trays and bento boxes with fancy patterns (not the flimsy ones or the styrofoam ones).

I also keep the oval side dish containers from Swiss Chalet - really handy for snacks.

The round black plastic ones from Mandarin are probably worthy of saving... But we don't

If it's plastic ones lke the ones they have at Spring Rolls, tofu container, butter container, I'll save it.

Stylefoam, no. We rarely get stylefoam cos we bring our own containers when we eat out to pack any leftovers

Swiss Chalet and Teryaki Experience ones are pretty decent quality.

How much are containers? $5-10 max? And you can even get glass ones if that's your cup of tea.

Saving take out containers is not worth the risk of carcinogens.

Nah, that's just a pic I found from google.

Btw, Jeff Foxworthy had a joke "you know you're a redneck when... Your matching salad bowl set says 'Cool Whip' on them."

I save the ones that feel really sturdy. usually its plastic and only if it has a good fitting lid. Actually I just save them because I am amazed they give out such high quality containers for takeout and feel bad throwing them out. I usually almost never use them though and just end up throwing them out at a later time...haha

My mom saves takeout containers, the one with the see through circle cover and black circle container. I think she gets some of the from the food place teriyaki. There actually really good to re-use and bring food to work in. Only thing is you can't micro-wave in them.

We save those ones, too - they actually have a better seal than the Tupperware disposables.

Those were the ones we save if we need them too. Not for microwaving food like you said but great for fridge storage, or sometimes (baked) treats to bring to work/friends

Yeah, actually when we have a BBQ or party, the guests can take home leftovers in these containers and we don't worry about them coming back.

I am not sure what the risk of toxins leaching from those containers is. I do know they were never meant to be reused, and certainly not microwaved.

exactly... so many people are worried about water bottles but keep their food in cheap plastic containers that werent even ment to be used twice.

i always thought some of those take out containers could be reuse cos the plastic are different? i'm not sure about that one so maybe someone could educate me..:cheesygri

i don't really order a lot of take out and take it home..and i wouldn't go out of my way and finish the the food outside and take the container home....but i save a lot of containers from butter, tofu, peanut butter, etc. are those safe to reuse?

I'm sorry but I had to laugh uproariously at that transliteration of 'styrofoam'.

People keeping leftover takeout containers didn't surprise me, though I've not heard of it before. I suppose it makes sense if they're sturdy.

I wouldn't though, seeing as they are meant to not be used over and over.

Is this an Asian thing, like using shopping bags for garbage bags is for us browners?

But the guy who said they take their own containers to a restaurant to save leftovers in, wow. That is just ... out there.

girl

How is bringing my own container to pack leftovers from eating at a restaurant different than people who bring their own eco bag to grocery store

If you want to give away food in containers, just use ziplock containers. The total yearly expensive (unless your super generous) will be less than $30 of giveaway containers.

Why take a health risk to reuse disposable one-time plastic containers?

True RFD'er

not really, a true rfder would ask for containers from the server at the restaurant and save the container...but I bring my own Corning, so I'm not really a true rfder...
