I do some business in the US, and therefore have a company "based" in NY. My insurance has expired, and they're quoting at like 3X the old premium! I have a friend ion the West coast who is in the exact same business, and his rates are much, much lower.

They are gouging me, as I have made no past claims. My broker can't seem to find any companies willing to insure me (they claim they don't know enough about the type of business... I sell and install parking machinery).

This would be a tragic end for my small business.

Anybody got any tips? I'm thinking that I could move my business to another state...

Getting coverage from any Canadian company for US operations is expensive - they just don't want to touch it due to product liability costs and the expensive legal system. For small cdn companies it really makes it tough. Check through other brokerages ...some of the larger brokers have links to specialists who may deal in US risks...alternativley partner with your American contacts and get to be additional named insured on their polices which may help reduce some of your laibility and costs
