It's touted as "a visual programming language for kids" in a Seattle Times blog post. Really, Boku is a game, the 360 controller is its input, and you can bet this Microsoft project seeks to tap the enormous enthusiasm for user-generated content seen in games like LittleBigPlanet. No release date has been set for Boku yet, but at Microsoft's Professional Developer's Conference this week, project lead Matthew MacLaurin indicated we'll get the chance to play it early next year. Whether that's a beta or full release was not specified.

That screen above is an example of the game's logic structure. Using it and a set of icons, kids (or adults) can build quickly build their own game and learn something about the process of creating a challenge that's fun to solve. If that sounds familiar, so does this caption on the project's page at Microsoft: "Stickboy can't walk but he packs a wallop." It describes a gun turret like object, but still, guys, pick another name.

Still, it's unfair to call this a complete copy of LittleBigPlanet, as it sounds like Microsoft is gunning for a format that's a little more open-ended than designing platform levels (even as deep and infinite as that experience is on LBP.) And Boku was originally demonstrated, without much hype, back in 2007. But I think it's fair to see this, and Microsoft's renewed interest in it, as an answer to a Sony exclusive and an experience no one has on the 360 so far.

Here's a video of Boku in action, to see what it's getting at. It covers top-down mazes, platforms, POV racing, even Frogger-style games.

I am guessing you never played LBP, since that bares no resemblance to anything in LBP at all, aside from the fact you can make levels, which is something I can remember as far back as Excitebike.

Sorry this is about as far from LBP as you can get in a game.

Lol +1. I own an xbox 360 but after playing LBP yesterday with my friends, I can say that this game doesn't seem much like it at all, and imo, LBP is by far better.

its unique as it brings multitudes of gaming types but it just doesn't look or has that feel LBP does.

I just watched a video of it and it didn't have the WOW or IT factor.

The first time I saw LBP was the big GDC presentation that introduced it to the world. That had the WOW factor and I was immediately sold on the product.

LBP is more of a "platforming creator" whereas Boku is more of a "game creator". I can see a lot of potential for Boku, as it puts the control in your hand and doesn't limit you to just platforming.

I see Boku being able to do more, but it's going to be much more difficult. LBP is pretty easy to master creating things, where Boku is like a programming language.

It's much different than Garry's Mod. LittleBigPlanet is a platformer sandbox, Garry's Mod is a shooter sandbox, and Boku is a ??? sandbox.

Gmod is capable of almost anything.. even 2.5d style sidescrolling. It's still the ultimate sandbox

I'm not the only one seeing the irony of a Sony fanboy crying because somebody (supposedly) ripped off Sony right?

Guess what? The controller you love is actually Nintendo's :O

LBP isn't the first sandbox type game. The secondlife world is almost completely created by the users.
