Just curious what cheeses people like eating?

I like Monterey jack, Swiss, Jarlsberg

Mozzarella and Cheddar are good too

I LOVE cheese!! Hard to say which is my favourite.

The two I have most often for every day use are swiss and gouda. Some of the others I really like are:
Asiago
Camembert
Provolone
Soft goat cheese
Feta
Baldersons extra aged cheddar
Brie

What can I say, they are all good!! I love this time of year at Costco, they get LOTS of varieties of cheese.

I love cheese! All different kinds. I like to go to Whole Foods and hit the cheese counter there. Awesome.

Cantenaar
Mimolette
Jarlsberg
Saint Andre
good quality old Cheddar
Havarti
and more.

Also important to have proper bread or crackers along with stuff like nuts, figs, dates, etc. to go with your cheese.

Mmmm.

Triple cream brie....FTW! Camembert second. Both warmed up...mmmm!

For everyday use (so to speak, I don't actually eat cheese every day)

Boccincini (for one of my fave salads...italian caprese)
Jarlsberg
Greek Feta
Goat cheese (again, warmed and usually in a salad)

Honourable mention to Jack cheese.

It get's no better then the king of cheeses, Parmigiano-Reggiano, for me. I also like Emmental, and a good sharp aged Cheddar (one of the local cheese shops has a wonderful 8yr old cheddar they import).

so-thin-you-can-see-through-them slices of old sharp cheddar...the 12-15 year Balderson is about as good as it gets at the supermarket, although it doesn't compare to some nameless cheddars we used to get in Vienna.

I generally prefer the harder cheeses over softer ones.

lol i see that someone beat me to it ... Is it available in Canada? If it is made in Canada it's not the same. I think there is some sort of law here that forces cheese makers to use only pasturized milk. Raw milk cheeses are exponentially better tasting IMO.

What an excellent question. And the answers are making me hungry…. Nice to see there are some adventurous tasters out there. I encourage the rest to try something new; any cheese shop (and most in-store cheese counters) will offer you a tasting!

Goat BRIE is a constant around here. Melts perfectly if it's one of the more artisan brands. Great too when you can add with FRESH figs.

I quite like this Goat GOUDA from this cheese shop in Byward Market in Ottawa. (Forget at the moment from where it is imported though.) There is nothing like it in Toronto, and whenever I know anyone will be there, I insist they pick some up. It's sharp yet flavourful, with a nice solid texture; and goes with everything from Parisienne loaves to Spelt crackers.

Another nice treat is fruit Stilton – we prefer with mango and ginger. Forget where we picked it up last (might have been in Kensington MKT). Nice and soft, spreads well; with a fruity and pungent attitude.

And always awesome is a nice Applewood SMOKED Cheddar.

*

There are few I really dislike, I tend to shy away from stronger cheese but adore raclette.... Just keep it sealed away from everything else in the fridge.....

That's so funny that you said that! One of my housemates just picked some up and I thought I might try it. But when I opened the package I almost fell over! She swears its fantastic and she can't get enought of it, but I just couldn't do it...

Halloumi is awesome too! It's traditionally a Greek or Turkish cheese and is amazing for grilling, pan frying, even setting on fire! Lots of the places on The Danforth have this as a dish, and they will light it up at your table. SOOOOO GOOD! It doesn't actually melt, just gets perfectly gooey and soft and with the lightly charred crust it is really excellent.

Used to like the straight forward cheeses (young cheddar, mozzarella, etc) one can easily find in North American markets. But after spending a year in Austria with a whole new world of cheeses, things are certainly different now. I don't have an absolute favourite. It depends on the occasion and other food to go with it.

But Bergkäse from local Alps villages was certainly memorable. Personally, I also like Grana Padano better than Parmigiano Reggiano.

Although they're a division of Saputo and not a small producer (personally i like small producers) they tend to be very reliable for cheese. Everything from their Brie ro Camembert to Cheddar are all great. I tried a soft washed-rind cheese recently called Sauvagine from them that was just awesome.

There's so many cheeses to try it's hard to have a favorite!
But if i could only take one cheese with me to a deserted island and have unlimited quantities it would have to be some form of camembert. The stinkier and runnier the better.

Is it possible for one to call oneself a Canadian and not have tasted Monterey Jack cheese? I had it for the first time today and I've known, at least by name, about it since grade school. Being oriental, we don't get cheese a lot but today, I saw some at the grocery store and tried some. I have to say it kind of tastes stale and a little like Swiss. I like Havarti the best as far as for sandwiches.

Same. I like this cheese too much. I am fat enough already, so I don't buy it very often!!

Costco also has some amazing gouda cheese that comes in packs of 2 blocks. I would buy it, but I could not eat the 2 blocks before they expire.

My favorite is probably a good orange/yellow cheddard. St-Albert is one of the best for my tastebuds.

Brie is up there too.

Here's an amazing easy Brie recipe to try if you have friends over...
- 1 small brick of Brie (small circle ones)
- Chutney jelly Mango, Peach whatever (I prefer mango)
- Grease up a cookie sheet
- place the Brie on the sheet and spread the chutney over it to cover the top and the sides
- put the combo in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 10 mins or just until the inside of the cheese is melted.
- once done, put combo on a plate and serve with crackers, yummy!
