I have Rock Band 2 and I love it ... never had Rock Band 1, but I really like a lot of the songs that were available on the DVD (not the DLC)
Anyway, what is the procedure for usingthe RB1 songs with RB2? Do I have to buy the DVD and pop that in and switch back and forth when I want to play RB2 or can you save the songs from the RB1 disc on the PS3 HDD and just have them available?
If the latter is the case, could I just rent RB1 DVD and export the songs instead of buying them (then paying the $4.95 license fee)
Any help is appreciated

Found the answer in the FAQ on the Rock Band website (should of went there first) ... here is the answer for anyone interested:
Will I be able to play songs from the original Rock Band in Rock Band 2?
Yes! In an industry first, Rock Band 2 allows you to export many of the songs from your original Rock Band disc to your console, so you can keep your back catalogue of 55 of the best songs from the original Rock Band track list. In addition, Rock Band 2 is the first game to have cross-title support for downloadable content, meaning that any songs you bought for Rock Band will work in Rock Band 2- you bought them, they’re yours, end of story.
How do I transfer my songs?
Insert your validly purchased original Rock Band disc and update your title. This will add an “export disc” option to the Extras tab on the Main Menu of the original Rock Band. Click this option and follow the onscreen instructions. **Note: there is a charge of 400 Microsoft Points to re-license the songs for use in Rock Band 2. You will need to be online to purchase the license key for these tracks**
Do I have to rebuy my downloaded songs to play them in RB2?
Nope! Rock Band 2 is the first game to support cross-title DLC, allowing you to play all of our downloadable content in either the original Rock Band or Rock Band 2 without any need to repurchase or re-download.

So if I wanted to upload Rock band songs onto my 360, but I don't have rock band drums, and neither would I have the game (after trading it in) How would I be able to play the Rock Band songs?

errr what?
I'm gonna pick up Rock Band 2 just the game and borrow a friends RB1 for the transfer. Worth it for 400 MS Points to get those 55 songs !

I think you're confused. What Harmonix has provided is a way for you to play your RB1 songs IN RB2 without having to do a disc swap everytime you wanted to play the RB1 songs.
So you still need RB2 in order to play RB1 songs. It's just that you probably won't need the RB1 disc anymore so it's ok to trade it since you don't need to authenticate it anymore.
I wish Sony would learn from this (see Singstar).

Keep in mind the transfer will only let you copy 55 out of the original 58 songs to the HDD. Enter Sandman, Run to the Hills, and Paranoid aren't included.

No they're not. You have to swap discs which is exactly what I don't want. I want all my songs cached to the HD which is what Rockband does. Imagine you want to play a song in Singstar vol1, you stop, swap discs, then sing along. Then someone in your party wants to sing another song that's in vol 2, get up and swap discs yet again. This is a major pain. At least at some point they'll patch it so you can swap in Singstar PS2 discs which is all well and good but you're still swapping.
This is why I've spent over $60 in Singstore and re-bought a fair bit of the PS2 songs so I don't need to swap.

I got my friend's RB1 yesterday, bought the $5 license from the PS Store and transfered the songs over last night. The whole process took less than 10 minutes. It is a really great system!
I tried finding RB1 at 6 or 7 Blockbusters and Rogers yesterday and NO ONE was carrying it for the PS3 (they did have it for the 360 though  ). I was happy that I remembered that my friend had the original or else I would have been tempted to buy a used copy and then resell it back to EB or something. I called around and EB is still buying RB1 for the PS3 for $22 ... the 360 version is something like $10 buyback

Thanks for clearing it up.
Another question:
I picked up GHWT (bundle) and Rockband 2 (disc).
How is the drum compatibility? Pretty decent? What pads are what colour?

That was the worst part. I so miss Run to the Hills, that song is freaking epic on Expert.

For what system?
PS3 is still awaiting a patch to make them compatible.
