Fear not, now you can run Quake 1 on XP and even play online deathmatch.
You need some files from a quake 1 disk you own and that's it. It even uses glide drivers to look nice. I have used it for the past three days and it is really fast. Also finding servers is super easy, or you can play alone using bots.

Real Quake players skipped out on Q2. :) Quake1 was released in 96 and people still play it online.

interesting, I never played Quake 1 but played Quake 2 extensively. I loved Quake 2, it was so awesome.
Might have to try Q1 and see what the fuss is about. Is it harder?

Q1 is like ten times faster than Q2. It just makes you feel very agile rocket jumping wherever. I find Q2 feels sluggish in comparison. However some prefer the slower pace of Q2.
Another thing to note is that Q1 has zero delay during weapon swaps. For example, when you switch weapons in Q2...you might have to wait a second or two before you can shoot. In Q1, it is instant therefore you could be shooting your lightning gun and firing rockets in almost a streamline. It just makes for some fast gameplay, you can also code certain buttons to change your gun and shoot certain guns as the same time and click another button to quickly change guns.

I'm waiting for the Quake 3 Live to come out ... you can play it in a browser for free with stat tracking and a bunch of other cool features ...
I hope it really takes off when it is finally released

I don't understand why someone would want to play it in a browser. I guess I'm just second guessing the performance of it.

From what I have read, it actually looks better in the browser than the original did. They have added additional graphical effects and backgrounds. It is suppose to be really smooth, balanced and better looking ...
... and it is easy to minimize at work ;)

I don't think Quake Live actually runs in a browser. I think you just check stats and browse servers in your browser, and then when you click a link it loads up the game separately.

That makes more sense and I would personally like to see this done instead. Q3 was all about the speed, accuracy and a solid steady framerate. There's no way I would have seen all of those being done in a browser and in 3D with improved graphics over the original.
