View Full Version : What A Rip-Off, $14 for Fish And Chips?

There's this family restaurant on Woodbine just north of Elgin Mills, it's the only place there adjoining a gas station and then it's all bush and vacant farmland. Anyways I went to eat there because it's the closet place there at lunch time where my company is building a new subdivision (and Honda plant).
I ordered fish & chips not caring to see the price because I figured it would be around $7 or $9 dollars. Dead wrong. It's $13.95 plus taxes equals almost $15, NO drink included and there's nothing special about the plate. 3 small, over-breaded & oily fish sticks and regular fries with a little bit of coleslaw. What a rip-off.

B.S. I can't believe any organization would hire someone so immature...unless it's clown school.
If you're willing to order without looking at price then you're "rich" enough to pay. Why continue to make yourself look foolish on RFD? 3 years worth of self-abuse should have taught you something...

what a stupid complaint.
it's a restaurant, expect to pay restaurant prices. $7 F&C is what you get at food courts.

More likely because he thought he was in Mainland and that's how much they pay there

This is not about me looking at a menu price or not, it's about an extremely high price to pay for fish & chips.
For the Eisntein who said "What did you expect, you are ordering from a restaurant", let me tell you that for that same price I can buy a seafood lunch platter at Red Lobster, a 4-star restaurant, not a 2-star gas station diner like the one I'm talking about.

I like the part where he says "oily fish sticks". Isn't that the fish part of fish and chips?? did you want oil free fish?? They have to be oily. Why not just order a cheeseburger but complain that there was cheese on it?
LOL.. read the menu. $13.95 is not that expensive for fish and chips. If you can't afford it, start packing your lunch, or go somewhere else.

Wow, what a bunch of haters...you guys...seriously, I think people would beat the **** out of you if you weren't hiding behind your computers. Not all mainlanders are cheap and an internet forum (esp like redflagdeals) ain't the place to take out your racist comments.
Anyways, agreed. Restaurant prices are higher, it's not much of a surprise to me either.

Okay maybe not a 4-star restaurant but at least a 3-star. Let me know of ANY seafood restaurant that can beat Red Lobsters' food quality for the same price and then I'll take you seriously that you know something about restaurants.

Let me clear up a misunderstanding. RFDers are not insulting Mainlanders, far from it, because some of the posters are Asian.
They're using "mainlander" from KK's own definition. He has a long history of ranting and hating on other groups, and even antagonizing other Asian communities (ie. HK, Overseas, etc) by stating he's Mainlander and superior to all RFD members.
So Yes, it SEEMS inappropriate and coming from left-field, but they're just reposting OP's craziness to highlight his insane rants. I don't believe any harmful intentions or insult is directed toward Chinese people --> just KK.

Had a long reply but deleted it. I decided not to get KK all worked up about it. Save your money and eat McDonalds then, they serve a great fish burger called Filet-O-Fish.

The hell did you pull racism from?
You see, when the issue of racism is brought up on RFD then it turns racist. It's best to refrain from doing that.

Story reminds me of one of my trips to Yellowknife. Everybody was tell us to hit this one place for the best fish and chips. So we got to the place and just order fish and chips with out looking at the menu at all. Well, for me it was the best that I've tasted at the time, but it turned out to be $27 bucks for a 2 piece with chips. Oh well.. chalk it up for "been there, done that"
At this point my current favorite place would be Barbs place in Victoria.

It's always a must do for me when I am in Victoria. Of course, I haven't had a chance to hit the east coast yet, and I am sure there will be excellent competition.

$13ish isn't so bad for fish and chips, considering you got 3 pieces of fish. do you even know what type of fish they used? if they used halibut, i'd even say that's a great deal.
mm, i now have a fish and chips craving.

Someone (molala, billdozer) specifically pointing at "mainlanders" and how some can be more frugal than expected. In fact, I've seen this more than once around here and the term mainlander itself is starting to get a bad aura around it. The generalizations get worse over time and the next thing you know, people are going to insult each other by calling them mainlanders (basically what is happening here anyways). That's not cool. Ok, perhaps not racist, but discriminatory. Definetely not appropriate. Anyways, 7jaii put it nicely and I won't argue too much, but I, myself, find it offensive.
And I agree, KK you are being a little ridiculous. Read the menu, ask for the price. nobody to blame but yourself for not asking. And flexwong has it right, 3 pieces is good ( usual serving is 2 sticks, afaik) and if its halibut, even better. especially in a "restaurant" rather than a take out place.

I apologize that I offended you. Billdozer and I point out mainlander because like 7jaii said kk always say how mainlander are the best people and constantly use that term to put others down...and if you read more posts by me, you'll find out that i'm one of those who never make any racist ot discriminatory comments......in fact...i blast those losers that does that constantly
if you read more from ot, you'll find out that kk is not only ridiculous in not looking at the menu and make a stupid thread like this

since when was Red Lobster a 4-star restaurant? They're no seafood experts. They just know how to overload your plates with butter and grease.

If I am not mistaken, Michelin has 0 to 3 stars only. I guess OP thinks Red Lobster is the best of the universe.

This is the funniest thread in a long time.
A guy complains his fish and chips are too expensive and it turns into an Oriental bun fight, full of racist accusations amongst the Orientals themselves.
And to top it off, Red Lobster has been lifted into the dizzy heights of 4 star dining. (I could only hope that it is 4 stars out of 10?)
Gotta love the food fights
