Hey Folks,

I bought a 360 the day they arrived on the market. So this unit while a number of years old, didn't really have a ton of hours on it.

Couple months back I got the ring of death. Be playing a game and boom... it would crash.

Looked into getting it repair, but it seemed to be more pain than it was worth really. Great deals these days on new units. So I just bought a new one. Took the hard drive off the old one and away we go.

So now I have a unit with a brand new HD, all the cables and the like.

Should I try and trade this off at a EB Games / Blockbuster?

I assume they power these units to make sure they work .. but how much to they actually test them?

Maybe get it fixed and modded at the same time?

Or just let it sit here with a Back-up Drive attached?

how much does MS charge (i assume it's out of RROD warranty)?
You could try selling it if u can't fix it.

Well I don't really need a second 360, unless it is modded. It is one of the original units so maybe it would be easier to Take care of.

So can these folks fix the ring of death... and Mod at the same time I guess is the question.

You still got another month left b4 the 3 year warranty lucks out.

I say just return it to M$ get it fix then sell it at EBgames or on RFD.

"then sell it at EBgames"

I've checked my unit and it says it is out of warranty. With new units going for $200... what would EB games give in terms of trade in I wonder? Wouldn't want to pay $60 for the repair... and get $80 in trade! (Numbers are a pure guess... but you get the idea).

repair is 100% free
MS covers all RROD repairs for free for the next month
repair it's self is usually about a week

trade value is $80 at EB(traded in one of my 360s 2 days ago)

Hey Viper... do you have a link to XBOX Canada where I can get the 360 fixed for free? Been digging around their site with zero luck.

Maybe you can save me some time!

Disregard the 'out of warranty' thing that shows on xbox.com. RROD is covered for 3 years without a receipt (as long as you haven't voided the warranty).

Actually the out of warranty message that shows up on xbox.com when you register your machine is the standard one year manufacturer's warranty (for problems not RROD related). The RROD warranty is 3 years which the OP should still qualify for.

The repair process was painless for me. Called them, got an email with a shipping label, went to UPS store and bought a $5 box and then UPS handled the rest (packaging as well). Got my console 2 weeks later due to some dumb UPS delay.

Considering it hasn't been 3 years since the release of the console, I'll chance it and say no.

It's been just a bit over 3 years since the release of the xbox 360. It was released a little earlier in 2005.

I thought the launch XBoxs(from Nov-end of Dec'05) had a longer RROD warranty, like 5 years or lifetime or something? And everyone else got three years standard. Maybe I'm dreaming, but I'm sure there were perks for the first consoles.
As long as you haven't opened it, I'd just call it in. Well worth the time if you get a working replacement out of it.

The original warranty on the 360, for all faults including the RROD was 1 year. It was only extended to 3 years in July of 2007. The only perks for getting a release unit were bragging rights, and possibly making a profit when flipping it on eBay.

Update:

Called Mybox, the 360 was already registered. Asked what the problem was... "ring of death".

They said it was a free fix.. sent me a pre-paid UPS Sticker, and I dropped it off at the local store.

Free shipping each way. 10-15 days they claim.

Will update.

Nov 7. Got my replacement Xbox 360 today! Called it a "Certified Microsoft Replacment Xbox 360 Console". Sent out Monday... got the replacment Friday. Also got a Card for 1 month free of Microsoft Live.

Next up. Got to figure out the `Mod`situation!
