I think I can justify a PS3 because I have people visiting more often, and we need something to do other than staring at ourselves and saying nothing.

Allright, the last system I owned was a modded XBox...so I'm quite out of date.

Few Q's

-How's the mod-scene, what is the likelihood of a sustainable mod being available for the PS3?
-How are the entertainment capabilities? Like, can I store my movies (from PC) on the HDD, so I can watch it on TV? PVR capabilities..it's got a hard-drive?
-Home? What's the status on that?
-When's the new Gran Turismo coming out?
-Is it HD-ready out of the box, I have a 42" HP Plasma that I got roughly 2 years ago...can I enjoy the beauty of HD without buying any fancy cables.

Thanks guys.

If you're in it for modding and the games go for a 360. You can't mod a ps3, so the 360's the only way to go (and you have to be careful, the new lite-on drive doesn't work).

I think you can copy avi's to the ps3, but divx playback is pretty sketchy, and it has issues with some xvid/older divx encoded files.

and the ps3 works fine with a generic hdmi cable, don't need to buy an overpriced hdmi cable, and cable will do (monoprice.com has cheap cables).

- don't believe there are any mods at all for the system, i think the cell processor has some low level hack proof stuff...i don't know

- hard-drive is easily upgradeable, 2.5" sata hard-drive that can be swapped out, I have my ps3 setup with media center sharing so I'm watching movies i have stored on my PC from my PS3

i've also read people using the built in web browser to go to sites like hulu.com and streaming media from there...i think that's US only but the browser does have Flash support so you can do things like watch Youtube or Gametrailers on it

- Home, next month? Supposed to come out about the same time as the new Xbox Experience

- Grand Turismo 5, there's a version out now but it's supposed to basically be a demo, full real deal next year?

- You will need to buy an HDMI cable, i got one at Superstore for $6.00 ...not sure why PS3 doesn't come bundled with it

you want to pirate games? The PC and 360 are your only choice to play much of the ps3 library free.

-There is some slight progress in the PS3 mod scene, there are avenues that are being figured out. There's one guy that has hacked the Home beta and is looking for ways to run backups. Also Sony allowing the installation of Linux OS's might also get somewhere. Right now it's not really economically feasible, blu ray burners and discs are too expensive.
-Home should be released by years end I think
-Gran Turismo is late 2009/2010 it looks like
-Unfortunately it's not HD ready out of the box, it only comes with composite cables. Any HDMI cable will work with the PS3, there are a lot of sites that sell em cheap (monoprice, eforcity)
