OK, from another thread about my DVD player dying, I am 95% sure I'm getting a PS3.

Of course in true RFD fashion I want the lowest prices. So I'm starting a thread on where to buy, costs, promotions and of course what version (basically if they are PS2 game back wards compatible) That one I will probably need help with from more experiences PS3 users

You can add to the thread for info, but I will take that info and put it below so we have a nice format to go to.

I dont think any of those ones are backward Compatible. I bought the one at future shop with the game. The game is good, but it has extremely long sections where you dont do anything you can skip them, but i grew to kind of like them. They made it the game more "real" with deap storylines for all the characters.

In case this is common in most of these games now, i have not played a video game since xbox one and they were mostly racing.

Why does the one at The Source say "With Blu Ray Player"? I thought all PS3s come with Blu Ray?

the only PS3 worth having is a original 60 with an upgraded HD.

The only SKU's are Backwards compatible are the 20 and 60gb.

I forgot which 80Gb Sku is backwards compatible through PS2 emulator.

But the ones you just listed on your original post are not backwards compatible.

So do these new ones have the PS2 emulator. I read some were hard ware based and others software.

I guess really I dont have many games that are PS2, so its not a huge issue. Its just if Im going to spend the money Id like to get the most band for my dollar.

The one that FS offers now for $449.99 with the game, is there any difference hardware wise than the other listed. Or is it the same with a game included

there are already tonnes of threads on this. do a quick search and see.

But anyways, if you want PS2 BW Compatibility, here is where it stands.

60GB - (not avail anymore, unless you find used) Full PS2 BW with the PS2 HW Emotion chip.

80GB MGS Edition - SW PS2 BW Compatibility. may experience slowdown in some PS2 games.

NEW 80GB bundle - no PS2 BW at all.

the 120GB i'm not sure about.

I understand that, I can never get the search engine to work right either.

If you want some PS2 BW, I would buy the MGS edition before you can't get it anymore, as its being replaced.

No, the PS3 that Futureshop has bundled with MGS4 for this week is NOT Backwards compatible. It's the same NEW 80GB PS3 that just comes with the game. I have the MGS4 PS3 BUNDLE that's backwards compatible. That bundle was made by Sony (meaning the game was actually inside the box & the box had the art work for MGS4.

This bundle can no longer be found anywhere like the 60GB (unless you find them used I guess). As of this moment, your only chance of getting a BC PS3 is if you buy one of these versions USED!

Good luck!

Ok, thanks. Thats a clear explanation. So basically anything new isnt backwards compatible.

Well I still have my rain check for the Zellers deal.

Does anyone know if Sears price matches things to other stores. I have a $50 Gift card coming from them as an apology for something they did to me

bump and a question on accessories

Where is the best place to buy the HDMI/component cables? It's like $40 in stores if I remember right. I went to amazon and I see them for $22 + shipping. Is there an even better place to buy extras? Namely I need an extra Dual Shock controller and the HDMI cable.

I was at Square One in Mississauga the other day. I went through all the stores. They ALL sell at $399.99. No bundles. Stores included Wal Mart, The Source, Zellers, EB, and Microplay.

monoprice.com is still the best place to buy HDMI cables, even with the lower $can

No new PS3 has backward compatibility. The only ones are 60GB PS3, 20GGB PS3, 80GB Motorstorm Bundle, 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle. Those are all discontinued models. The standalone 80GB unit has no BC.

Went to Superstore today and they had some in stock. The Zellers one I have with the raincheck may never come in, so I decided on this one with the $35 off coupon

Came to $384.99 taxes in. It was $399.99, the same as any of the other stores. I got them to put gift receipt on it in case I have buyers remorse after a day or too (which I always do on purchases like this - dont know why) Plus I dont think Im ging to get it cheaper anywhere else

I decied me trying to find a backwards compatible one is basically going to be a lost cause, and for the 2 Adult type games I have, Ill just live with it

Just with the $35 off coupon thought i better do it before it expired

FS had open box ones last night for $359.99. They had 3, but mine came pretty close to that anyways new, so I didnt bother

What a way to limit a gamer's library and no I will not purchase another ps2 just to play these titles.
Sony lost me as a customer and the XBOX360 and Wii should be a better choice for anyone that needs a gaming console. These two are compatible with older titles so play away!

the only reason I'd buy a 360 would be to mod it...

I have a Wii already (though don't play that much) and I'm glad it's jsut like the PS2 when it comes to being modded... single layer DVD-R's are nice! :)

So ya, I'll be getting a PS3 (even though I'll have to buy games) becuz most 360 exclusives I can get on PC, while I can't for PS3 ones. Also free online is win. And LBP... that's a reason in it's own right!

THe only reason Im getting it is for the Blu Ray and media centre capablities. The gamre play is just a bonus for me. I will use it, but not as much as the dvd player portion of it

Sucks that they force you to use their Bluetooth remote instead of everybody's IR remote is just another example of Sony's greed.

Would like to see an updated XBOX360 with built in Blu Ray player. That would further sink Sony's sales.
They also had to do another laptop battery recall. Made me chuckle quite a bit. :)

The only reason Im going Blu Ray is my old dvd player died, and then I wanted to upgrade to Blu Ray to take advatage of my Aquos tv. Since its about $99 more than a regular player, I thought for the extra stuff its worth it.

If my dvd player didnt die, I wouldnt even of bother to start to llok
