I have a video file in avi format. The video plays with no problems in Windows XP, but when I try it in a clean Vista installation I get audio but no video. I assume Vista doesn't have the proper codec.

I do not want to download K-Lite or other codec packs, because I've had lots of bad experiences these messing up my display settings and media player.

What's an easy way to convert the avi file I currently have into a format that can be played in Vista?

just download and install VLC player.

it should play any avi file without needing a codec (it's built in already)

Why don't you just find out precisely what codec it uses? In XP, right-click on file -> Properties -> Summary -> Advanced.

Barring that, open the file in Windows Media Player -> File -> Properties -> Advanced -> see what video decoder is being used.
