My family and I need to fly back to HK asap for a funeral. Do you know where I can get cheap airline tickets? online? tour east? or purchase @ the airport?

I called Air Canada & united and they do not offer any type of compassionate fare.
I would like to fly direct but the prices that they are quoting me is over $1,700 and this is low season. argh.

thanks

Air Canada used to offer the bereavement fare to Hong KOng but they no longer exist!!

http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/before/bereavement.html

You should check the local travel agency and see what they can find.

I went to expedia.ca and got less than $1200 through chicago with UAL.

Check it out and good luck.

Total price for this trip: C$1,112.23

Why not Hong Kong?

If they are going to exclude Hong Kong, might as well exclude the other Asian destinations too.

United seems to have bereavement rates. Try calling them. I am under the impression that American Airlines have also. Having said that, be sure that you know what the going rate is for your dates before calling as some people have commented on websites that those rates actually are no better than what everyone else can get.

Do you have any emergency or bereavement rates/discounts?
United offers emergency fares for different situations. You cannot obtain these fares on united.com and must call United Reservations at 1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331).

My GF went through the same thing last month, and realized that you might as well book from Expedia or other online site.

Ur case was pretty good already, they wanted to charge her CAD3,600 for the ticket, but she ended up paying $1300 with UA via Chicago.

Try that instead.

You can try booking with Continental. They offer bereavement fares which is 20% off if the fare is over $1000. They're way better than United in my opinion.

Sample date Oct 27th - Nov 10th
1 Adults (age 18 to 64) 1,015.00 CAD
Additional Taxes/Fees 96.00 CAD
Total Price 1,111.00 CAD
minus 20% = $926

All you gotta do to get that price is to show them
Name of the relative
Relationship to the customer
Name, address and telephone number of funeral home, hospice, or hospital
Name of doctor (if applicable)

or if you don't have that right away, u can claim it after you come back with copies of all the info.

When did AC get rid of their bereavement fares? I used it about 6 years ago to fly back to China via HK for my uncle's funeral. At the time I had no clue they offered these types of services as I went to a travel agency and told them my situation. I have to say I got top notch service as I was able to get my passport, and plane tickets within 24hrs. I think our ticket cost went from about 5k to just 2k for my mom and I flying out of Halifax. AC gave my mom the chance to say good bye to my uncle :(

Sorry OP to hear about your loss. I hope you sort this all out ASAP if you haven't already. I guess in a situation like this going to a travel agency is the best option as they know where to get the deals and to get there as fast as you can.

thanks everyone for your input. i didn't get a chance to contact continental about the 20% bereavement discount. I ended up booking with travel agency on United. I would have liked to go on a direct flight but i have a tight budget, now that the economy is going down the drain. $1265 is indeed a good price. my fare is a bit more but what can you do when you have limited amount of time to plan. i wonder if anyone has put up a thread/section about bereavement fares or a list of airlines to check if something like this has come up suddenly. i think it would be helpful for others, if such occasion arises. (knock on wood)!
