I'm currently using Rogers home phone and now they're doing some restructuring, which doesn't make me feel very comfortable to stay with them any longer. Also, the price is kind of high. I've been thinking of switching to a different route- have home phone through internet.

The phone through internet can be had for as little as $10/month, while we pay about $45/month for Rogers home phone line, and with their restructuring it seems we'll have to cash out more money for stuff we don't even need.

I currently pay $30 tax inc. for 5Mb ADSL line, of which I get max of about 1Mb of speed (not very good location for ADSL). I don't care much whether or not I'll have to keep my current ADSL provider, so if I have to switch to another company to get internet phone - that can be done.

The question is - is it worth to go internet route for the phone? Any advantages/disadvantages/serious risks/ or simply too much of extra hassle?

Any companies I should consider in particular? I've been looking at Primus and Acanac as providers for both internet and phone. Any comments about them? I've heard that Acanac has horrible customer service support, but are they reliable enough? With my current ADSL company, I only had to call for service several times over 6 years I've been with them, so if Acanac is just as reliable, I don't care if their support stinks.

I had internet phone and got rid of it because I found it went down alot along with the internet(cogeco). I ended up going with rogers home phone because it runs through your existing bell lines. I think our plan is $24.95 per month and 7 cents a minute Canada/Usa long distance.

Yeah, a friend of mine had Acanac internet+phone and hers wasn't problem-free either. But then again - she had a pretty bad location. Another friend has been using internet phone for quite a while and he doesn't have many troubles with it. So I just wanted to see what's the average experience...
