I fly both domestic/international with them, as in every fare search i've made for my destinations have the cheapest rates (mostly out of Detroit, MI). For the last 6 years i've flown with them, never a late flight or late arrival, and great service. One of my flights arrived late in Amsterdam, and when I got out, they had told my plane to wait (45min)and an airport car waiting for me for my connecting flight, they took me right away, and made sure I was ok.
The only thing I don't like about them is the in flight food...its not that great.

I used to live near Memphis, a Northwest hub; and flew them quite a bit before moving to Canada. They are an average American carrier. Nothing about them particularly stands out, but neither is anything that bad.
If you are used to flying with Asian or European carriers, you may be quite disappointed in the level of service. If you have a choice when flying from Canada to Asia, I would always choose an Asian carrier. My partner works in the airline industry and says that Air Canada and Cathay are quite comparable in economy class. If you're a tall or big person, Air Canada's seat pitch is better than Cathay.

not really answering the OP's question but are you aware that the trip from Toronto to Hong Kong on NWA will stop twice? Detroit and Tokyo.

the flight i'm looking at is flying toronto > detroit> HK
its the cheapest flight i can find that's why. i've flown cathay before, but at $1000 taxes in ( at least thats what flightcentre.ca says) i dont see a much more competitive price. AC and cathay are all around $1800.
the service is that much under par with cathay and ac eh?

Yep, UA has decent prices to HK. I flew with them just a month ago but the flight from Chicago to HK was horrific...flight back was ok.

flew on 4 of their planes, one flight was slightly late taking off. On the way back one of their seats reclining feature (the one that I was in) was broke, so on take off and landing my seat reclined.
Other than that - no issues.

We went to South Korea in December 2006 with Northwest Airlines and there was a few delays (snowstorms in Ottawa) and there wasn't much time in between the flights but other than that, there were no major issues.
We will fly again with them this coming December to Miami, FL via Detroit, MI.

Now that you've booked it make sure you go online 24hrs in advance to pick your seats. Although they allow you to do it at the time of booking i realized that some people cancel last min so you have the opportunity to pick a row where nobody is sitting in the middle seat....if you have not already done so.
