Works out even hotter in Ontario with $15 off coupon (http://www.everykilowattcounts.com/residential/powersavings/images/coupon-EKC-PSE-2008-programmable_thermostat.pdf)....

$2.99 + tax...This will be definitely in the selected deals.

The 7.5A Electric Impact wrench on page 1 is great -- very powerful for an electric and capable of removing every bolt I've put it to the test on. Highly recommended, but don't forget to get impact sockets (wouldn't want a regular socket to shatter and hurt yourself!).

The thermostat, angle grinder ($49), and the mitre saw ($199) are all great products as well that I own and really enjoy - no complaints about any of them for the past 1-3 years!

The $4.97 Santoku knife is also quite a good knife unless you are a professional. It's great for most regular people and even as a backup to a true chef knife, IMO.

Refund.

I've heard that the ABC-dry-chemical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABC_Dry_Chemical) type extinguishers leaves behind a somewhat messy residue that need to be cleaned after the fire (also somewhat corrosive and can damage sensitive electronics).

Might want to consider a carbon dioxide (http://www.kiddecanada.com/utcfs/Templates/Pages/Template-53/0,8062,pageId%3D2643%26siteId%3D463,00.html) type extinguisher (although recommended only for class B & C fires (not class A)).

The missing-twin Henckles International 8-pc knife set seems fairly well made from the flyer picture (not sure $120 is such a great price for it though).

Edit: fire classes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_classes#US_Class-B.2C_European_class-B_and_C_fires).

Every hammer drill I have used in has a switch to go from hammer, to regular drill. I would have to believe this one does as well. Just bear in mind that hammer drills tend to be heavier and bigger then normal drills...

Dry chemical is much more effective and easier to use than CO2. Without training, it is not easy to put out B class fires with a CO2 extinguisher. Also, most C class fires quickly become A class fires once the breaker trips or fuse blows in a residential fire. Considering the most likely fires are A and B in a house, CO2 is a relatively poor choice of extinguisher.

If you can successfully put a fire out, clean up is easier with a CO2 than dry chemical. Clean up should not be your primary concern when fighting a fire (just ask a firefighter )

Love the santoku knife... (like saying the word too). Bought another one as a spare. Good weight, easy to chop things with. Only downside is that its not dishwasher safe (don't know why) AND food does indeed stick to it.

Thanks OP, used the free shipping code for the knife and thermostats (baseboard ones). I'm not sure why someone warned against these. I have purchased two sets of these. The original model that didn't have variable heat levels is ok. Looks really nice, compact, but not as accurate with the temperature maintenance (used in areas where this is okay). And the newer Noma model (pictured on the website) with the variable temperature control (10 power levels).

These thermostats are an awesome deal in Quebec. Buy 7, get a $65 rebate in Quebec.... comes out to $11 each including tax! Not sure I am eligible though, I took advantage of the program 2 years ago. Does anyone know if we're allowed to take advantage of this program more than once if its in separate years?

Knifes like these are not dishwater safe cause the jets are strong enough to force water into the handle, however the water cannot fully drain simply with gravity out, and the metal tang will eventually rust.

You are probably correct about the relative effectiveness of dry chemical over carbon dioxide (since the dry chemical basically melts and smothers everything; and hence the mess).
I recall a video of somebody trying to extinguish a car fire with CO2, and the fire just re-ignited when the spray was moved to another part of the fire (the technique is to maintain a general overall fog even as the spray is directed at various parts of the fire).

But CO2 can be useful, especially where expensive and sensitive equipment might be involved.

The true fire-fighting enthusiast would have both types available of course.

I've had 2 Noma's now, they have never broken down, however they are not accurate (e.g. humidity rating) and unnecessarily make your furnace/ac runner longer than necessary.

I just moved into a new place that had those manual thermostats, when I was getting quotes for a new AC every single company told me to stay away from them and either keep the original one on the wall or buy a honeywell or similar quality model.

My brother has this particular model as well installed and is removing it to install a honeywell or similar quality model.

Thanks AG ... picked up 6 of the thermostats (baseboard) and 2 of the knifes online. Hopefully Brunes is right and these things are good. I had previously attempted to buy thermostats like these but I ended up buying the wrong ones and then just gave up. Hopefully this will save $$ on heating. If not, it should make things more comfortable anyway.

Too bad there is no battery backup ... I'm hoping this won't turn into a big issue. Any thoughts on that Brunes?

I would think twice before purchasing the NOMA Programmable 7-Day Electric Heat Thermostat.

http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6792994&postcount=10

I had the same problem with a Noma 7 day. I wasn't happy with it overall (except for the $20 price). I replaced an ancient Honeywell box which actually did a much better job of maintaining the temperature.

The Noma seems to work as follows:
- As long as the room temperature is within 0.5 degrees of the set temp, it will continue to call for heat.
- It will call for heat as often as you set the cycle rate setting. But the duration that the heat stays on for each cycle depends how far off the set temp you are.
- If room temp falls 0.5 degrees below the set temp, the unit goes into 'recovery' mode. The heat will stay ON permanently until it gets to 0.5 above the set temp. This really sucks IMO, because keeping the heat on for so long is going to make some rooms way too hot.

Setting the unit to farenheit is the only thing you can do to improve the accuracy, because 0.5 degrees F is less than 0.5 degress C. But in general I would not buy a Noma thermostat again.

Thanks OP for posting the deals.
I have a question - What does a "Special Buy" mean? The items on special buy do not say that they have been discounted, but the remark " sorry, no rain checks" kind of gives the impression that this may be a hot deal? For instance I am looking at the hair starightner. Is it a good deal and any body knows how good is that model of Conair? Or is this just a gimmick?

Normally "special deals" that have SKU starting from 99 are one time deals and these items are not carried in the regular stock so they do not have "regular price". This is a reason they do not offer rainchecks.

Often they are hot deals, however, as with any deal, you need to check prices in other stores and RFD forums to make sure that this deal is really "hot".

does anyone know how these compare with Costco's Michelin Tire bags that are on sale now?

If these are anything like the ones from Part Source, the Michelin ones win hands down. I have both and the Michelin ones are much easier to use as they have elastics down each side. The ones from part source have a belt and buckle system and getting them adjusted properly was an absolute *****. I will assume they are easier now that they are adjusted. I wish I had picked up a second set of the Michelins for $20 when they were cleared out last year.

What's wrong with them? We had one in my last place from CT and never had a problem with it. Easy to program.

My dad had the exact one that's on sale

The digital display is very hard to read unless looking at it straight on and there's no light source shining on it - even a brightly lit room in the afternoon was next to impossible

Never showed the correct room temperature

Buttons and programming are overly complicated from what it needs to be - I would constantly get calls asking how to use it, turn the temp up/down!

Eventually stopped working after a year or so and my dad went back to his trusty non-digital thermostat

I think we need to clarify every time if we talk about electrical heat version or forced air heat version - they are two different models.

The 7.5A Electric Impact wrench on page 1 is great -- very powerful for an electric and capable of removing every bolt I've put it to the test on. Highly recommended, but don't forget to get impact sockets (wouldn't want a regular socket to shatter and hurt yourself!).
FINALLY! I've been waiting for this item to go to $49.99 for ages! Guess where im going right after work!:D

Does a hammer drill work as a drill alone? Like a multifunction drill.FYI, there is a difference between a hammer drill, and an impact drill (wrench). Basically, a hammer drill is often used for drilling into brick or concrete, whereas an impact wrench excels in removing wheel lugs (heavier knocking mechanism). But can also be used as a heavy usage drill such as long screws into decks etc.

does anyone know how these compare with Costco's Michelin Tire bags that are on sale now?
I own both the costco michelin tire bags and the canadian tire brand. Both are exactly the same specs and work perfectly. Probably from the same factory in China no doubt.:-0 Only get them where they are around the $10 point...which is often:lol:

http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6792994&postcount=10

I can tell by what people are posting in this thread that it seems like most people only *THINK* have problems like this because they don't understand how electric heat thermostats work, and they are just used to their old inaccurate analog thermostat and whatever setting they left it on all the time.

Digital thermostats are EXTREMELY ACCURATE. As a result, if you have the thermostat set to 20, it is going to keep it at 20, IN THE AREA WHERE THE THERMOSTAT IS LOCATED. But your electric heater IS NOT THERE, it is (at least it should be) on the other side of the room. This means that when the thermostat triggers the heater it has to heat all the air in between it and the thermostat to 20 degrees before the thermostat will shut it off.

As a result, until the area where the thermostat reaches 20, the area AROUND THE HEATER will likely be WARMER than 20 degrees. This certainly does not mean that the thermostat is keeping the heater on "longer than it has to" or any other such nonsense, it is just how non-convection baseboard heat works. The thermostat will then wait until it is 0.5 degrees or 1 degree above the target temperature and shut off - the reason it waits is so that it is not constantly turning on and off all the time.

If you don't like it then get a convection system or get some ductwork, don't complain about the thermostat.

EDIT: As an aside the post you have linked is not even talking about an electric heat thermostat. I can tell just by the wording ("call for heat").

This is probably due to the dollar dropping but something worth noting...

I've seen in past CT deals (and picked one up myself during that time) the Henckels Fine Edge Forged 8-piece Cutlery Set go for 99.98. So at 119.99 you may want to wait (if you're thinking of picking up this set) for it to drop lower because I'm sure...eventually it will =)

Just FYI, the battery in my Nomas from 3 years ago lasts at least 5+ months. I know this because I flip off the heater breakers around May every year and back on in September - and the time (and display ) is kept lit the entire time on these.

Is it just me, but in the flyer i picked up this morning at canadian tire, it had the thermostats on for 19.99 - $15 rebate = 4.99

I bought them at 4.99, but now after looking at this thread again, which one is correct?

I'm going tomorrow to get them to match their website price. It's the same item.

Should this then be susceptible to the SCOP (because it's in print for 19.99 and on their website for 17.99)

The - $15 rebate is correct but that is only valid in Ontario, it is a hydro one coupon I think. Other provinces may have their own rebates as well.

You are correct, I found out today that Ontario price is $19.99, or $4.99 after the coupon. I corrected Selected CT deals section now.

Their website says "Canadian Tire has attempted to match online prices to those in store; however online prices, product and service selection and availability, and sale effective dates may differ from those in store and may vary by geographic region" therefore dealer does not have to match online price.

So SCOP is definitely not applicable, however if you print website price the store may or may not accept it, YMMV.

You can also try to buy online with free shipping, and then bring to the store and apply the coupons - you will more likely be successful this way, as the store has nothing to lose in this case. But again - it is not guaranteed.

If all you want is a code reader then just get one on eBay or Amazon for ~ $30. Thats where I got mine, worked fine. Or get one from Princess Auto I think they might have cheap ones.

Code readers at stores in Canada are insanely overpriced for what they do (read some blips off a wire and show a number)

Heres one for $35 with free shipping:

Any code reader should be able to read the stored trouble codes.
Your purchasing decision is dependent more on price, and quality.

The 3 reviews (http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444328 5108&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672441&bmUID=1224336897771&deptid=1408474396672395&ctgrid=1408474396672399&subctgrid=1408474396672441) seems positive.
A basic reader can frequently be found for <$50 (might want to check some web vendors. www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Equus-3030-Diagnostic-Post-1996-Vehicles/dp/B000EVYGQY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1224337221&sr=1-1) has this same unit for US$60 (but I'm fairly certain they do not ship electronics to Canada)).

Some fancier readers are able to display engine sensor readings, fuel trim, etc..., if you want to pay for more expensive units.
Other units you plug into a laptop, if you like to tinker along those directions.

Edit: just noticed brunes post. That unit linked on ebay does not support the CAN (controller area network?) signal protocol that is fairly popular with newer cars (you want to ensure the reader supports the protocol used on your car).

What $15 instant rebate? Where is it from? I just bought the Noma Programmable thermostats yesterday but I don't see any instant rebate at the cashier. I live in Vancouver.

Actually, have a look on CT's website.

I went back, brought the printout of the website to CS, and they refunded me the $2 each that I bought.

ok, so, I bought the wrong thermostat for my place. I got the one for electric heat instead of the one for forced heat. Stupidly I also didn't take the receipt from the cashier. The downtown store doesn't have store credit or refunds, and I won't be going to mississauga for a while, so if anyone wants to buy mine for $7.69 let me know. Otherwise, I'll go through the hassle of returning it.

Also, does anyone know whether the $15 off coupon is applicable for $30 thermostat for forced heat?

You can find the manual here:

You should check your current thermostat to determine what voltage it uses, how its wired and so on..

You are probably correct. Just make sure that your order is over $25 before taxes and choose standard delivery.
If you do not see free shipping on the final confirmation page - it means your postal code is not eligible - very rare case. I guess this might be due to high delivery costs - I am surprised to see that it costs $90 to ship some small (I assume from the price) items.

Yeah, it must have to do with proximity, which sucks :(

I had tried to order 2 of the dual floor lamps and 2 folding tv trays; considering the gas to drive there would cost $20, I'm interested to know how they can justify $90 to standard ship.

I also tried ordering some batteries from there last month. 12 9V would have cost over $40 to ship (for $35 worth of batteries). Is someone walking these things to me? Yeesh!

I have one of those Noma baseboard thermostats.
I also have several of these Aube models:

http://www.aubetech.com/products/produitsDetails.php?noProduit=54&noLangue=2

The Aube model, which costs more (~$30+ each), is a way better model IMHO.
They are more sensitive (manual states to 0.1 C) and appear to keep my heaters functioning less frequently.

The Noma model will register on screen 0.5 degrees warmer than my desired setting and yet still be running the heat full blast.

Also, I really like the manual, automatic and econo mode settings easily available on the Aube models. Again, IMHO, worth the extra money for the Aube model on the one time purchase to keep the house more comfortable, and in the long term (hopefully) save $$ on heating.

I have these Noma ones and they do a great job for me...

and once the temperature gets to the desired setting, its only at 10-20% to keep the temperature constant. These have the power level "chevron" bar (>>>>>>>>).

Maybe you have the mode set wrong. I know that it has a mode where its binary and the power levels do not work (for convectors?).

Maybe I am missing something - but when I look at the manual (http://www.aubetech.com/manuel/2/TH104PLUS.pdf) - in the specifications it says "resolution 1 C"

Am I looking at the wrong model? Also, it says that heat cycle rate is preset at 15 sec.

On the Noma you have more choices - you can cycle at 0 sec (no cycling) 20 sec or 300 sec, also they have so called precomfort recovery option which allows to activate heating in advance, but you can disable it.

However if options are not set up properly (e.g they recommend 0 sec cycle rate for fan assisted baseboards and 20 sec for non-fan assisted baseboards, ) - you may get some undesirable results.

Please keep in mind that current price is not a regular price, it is a sale price (probably one of the best deals I have seen) for the thermostat that normally is more expensive then $30 Aube.

I know, lame eh? It used to be a mining town, then the mines shut down. Then it was a forestry town, then it closed. Right now it's a Hydro town, but soon that will be gone too. It's not very beautiful (small northwest Ontario towns never are), but it's got lots of outdoor rec., if it floats yer boat.

And it's not that remote, there's 5 Canadian Tires within a 2 hour drive :P
