Yes, the CPU is old but it is still dual core. For normal web browsing or word processing, it is more than enough.

This is nation wide, I picked one up today in BC!
$399.99 - Toshiba Satellite AMD Athlon X2 TK57 1.9GHz Laptop (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10110058&catid=25315&logon=&langid=EN)

Thanks OP! I was going to pick up a netbook but this does so much more for about the same price. :D
*EDIT
The laptop comes with a 1GB PC2-5300 SODIMM installed, the 2GB Kingston module slid into the 2nd slot with no problems. I was worried that it had 2x512MB modules but it doesn't!

At any rate, so far so good, I don't like the fact that the reload took 45 minutes.

how do you like it ?
I'm still doing the initial setup on it but here are my first impressions.
What I don't like:
1) The keyboard is multilingual so it has an extra key beside the left shift key - this will take a little getting used to but its not a dealbreaker
2) It does not come with an original Vista installation DVD, only a recovery partition on the hard drive. The instructions say you can burn a recorvery DVD from the partition but I haven't got that far yet
What I do like:
1) The screen is very nice, viewing angles are good and I like the glossy finish
2) The integrated SD card reader is a nice touch
3) The physical ON/OFF switch for the WiFi is usefull
4) The 6-cell 4000 mAh battery should be more than enough

Try this program: SharpKeys (http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/). You can rebind the extra key to something else (e.g. another left shift) using this. Takes 30 seconds, and the change is made in the registry so nothing to run in the background.

Hi,
I also bought this laptop this afternoon. I've already decided that I'm going to take it back. The reasons for this are as follows.
The keyboard included with the unit is a bilingual one, resulting in the enter button being reduced to a small vertical bar. This makes touch typing much more difficult.
Also, the inverter in the screen of the unit produces a constant buzzing noise and the hard drive produces high pitched squeals during seeks.
Thanks for reading.

my sister got one too
350 for the laptop
34.98 for the buffalo 2gb ram (they ran out of kingston and discounted 15bux for the buffalo)
9.99 for the nx400 printer (should be 29.99 from the 99.99 price but he thought this was the nx100 that is 9.99 from 69.99)
119.99 for the 2 year psp (which works out to 70 bux cause of the discount on laptop)
70bux isnt bad for psp since i know how to get psp honoured for laptops quite easily and usually on the first or 2nd attempt
nice screen, not as heavy as other 15 inch lappies, 3gb of ram makes it fly pretty good. battery life is so so, like 3 hours on power save with lowest screen brightness
for what she paid, its alot better than other 499.99 deals (especially acers which suck based on a few experiences with them)
oh yea i tried to return just the psp but the damn smelly guy wrote package deal on it (i went to another fs to try to return it heh) but either way i think my sister will keep the bundle

How did you get it for $350?!? at $350 this is hot. Also, does this have a mini pci-e slot if we wanted to add a wireless n card? can it take 2 X 2GB memory for 4GB total? Can you post up your receipt?

The sales most likely discounted the laptop to add the PSP so that he'd pick up the PSP along with the laptop. A bundled deal, so if he returns the PSP, he'll have to return the latop as well, and vice versa.
Depending on their PSP numbers (for the day, week or month), sometimes they'll discount items so that their warranty sales look better on paper.

I picked up this laptop Oct 3rd for my mother, and its perfect for web browsing/email. Only complaint is the bilingual keyboard - my mother doesn't mind, but i don't think i could ever buy one for myself.
Another unfortunate thing - i paid $449 on the 3rd, and now on the 18th, i'm outside of Future Shops 14 day price protection.. would have been nice to get the $50 back!

So you figure $40 for a pci-e N card, $35 for additional 2GB Ram (bump it up to 3GB total...) and $15 for BT adapter... I'd say for under $500 you'd have a pretty bells-n-whistles laptop here!
What is the highest spec ram this can take?

Vista is not the problem, its the fact that the OS included is 32bit. XP with 32bit would have the same issue. A 64 bit OS (vista or xp) would be able to address more memory, up to 16gb I think (someone correct me if i'm wrong)

First of all, I personally don't believe N card will give you additional speed benefit, when internet is already shared among a few in the household. However, I did upgrade the card for the 5ghz A band for fewer interference to nearby network.
Additional ram? No can do. There are two slots for ram, all used- 512 each. So if you upgrade, get one 2GB ram, to get to 2.5GB.
BT adapter is good:)

Hi,
I also bought this laptop this afternoon. I've already decided that I'm going to take it back. The reasons for this are as follows.
The keyboard included with the unit is a bilingual one, resulting in the enter button being reduced to a small vertical bar. This makes touch typing much more difficult.
I can certainly understand your feeling about the bilingual keyboard. Although I type a lot of French, I prefer to use US-International keyboard layout. It's not just the Enter key that is problematic, but also the narrower left Shift key. My wife does not to have any problem with it.
That said, you'll have a hard time to find a notebook without a bilingual keyboard. You're limited to MacBook (Pro), Dell, and Lenovo.
