I am thinking about going to London in Jan 2009. When I looked online at british airways website, the prices for the outbound flight are cheap at $229 but return segement is a whopping $1200! How come the return segment is so expensive? Is there something I should know about? I even tried returning to US airports, but are around the same price. Should I book now or should I wait until x-mas to book?

It could be date specific. Some days are more expensive than others. Try shifting the days back and forth. Also, what is going on in London during your return date?
Try another airline as well.
