Ok, so recently everytime i exit the car and touch the door I get shocked. It freaking hurts, it's never happened before, and I haven't started wearing anything different. It's at the point where I know its going to happen and I brace myself when I close the door lol:evil: . Anyone know how to prevent this or minimize the occurrences?

Had this happen to me . Ended up being coins down where the lighter used to be in the ashtray . Mechanic said it was a short somewhere and that was the first place he looked .

Cool weather gives static shock to your car doors, so get yourself a Hello Kitty Static Electricity Key Holder which has a powerful static absorption that helps in reducing the chances of getting shocked. Just touch this static discharger to your door before you touch it. You can pick up one for 14 bucks.

The FREE fix would be to continue touching the door while getting out.

for a $0 solution, simply use a key and touch any "potential-shock" surface (car doors, office doors, etc) before touching it with your hands.

When you exit the car, hold the metal part of the car door, before you step on the ground, that way you don't get a shocked

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. It seems to get worse as the air gets drier and as the weather gets colder...

You can buy something that drags onto the ground, from your vehicle, that stops that shock, and yes, it does hurt when you are shocked getting out!! I'm just too cheap to buy it, LOL! Touching the door should help, and wearing real shoes, NOT Crocs, should also help. (Not saying the OP is a Croc Wearer!!) I noticed when my DD and I were in CT one day, we were getting shocked a LOT and it hurt a LOT! I asked the lady at the till about it, she said some people comment about it.... I later realized it was our shoes!! The non rubber sole of (fake) croc type shoes and foam croc-like material sandals were doing a number on us, so make sure to wear good shoes. I find that even wearing rubber soled shoes, I will still get shocked every time I get our of our truck, so I'll make sure to try to touch the door first.

Carry a sheet of Bounce fabric softener in each pocket of your jacket (or trousers) and touch them frequently. One reason you put Bounce in your dryer is to take the static electricity off. Works just as well for your body.
And yes, don't wear Crocs.

Surviving a lighting strike will really impress girls.

I've gotten 2cm. Still doesn't compare to the day when a friend and I ran our hands across all the CRT monitors in the computer lab and went to touch each other like in ET. Had to have been a good 1-2 inch spark. Yeah, we were stupid in HS.
I don't might the shock too much from car doors, although my biggest shock usually comes from my front door which is pretty bad when you can hear the crack of the spark.

Spraying static guard on my car's seats was enough to stop it while I was exiting my vehicle. Never encountered it when getting in, though.
Grounding straps - they wear out too fast since they drag along the road surface, and I found the one that I got for my car didn't do anything.

Stop rubbing your butt against the seat so hard.

Do people here really buy things to stop from getting static shock? I'm surprised to hear this from the RFD crowd.
The reason why there's static buildup is because the car is insulated from the ground by the rubber tires. All you really need to do is as Keigotw explain: open the door, touch or hold any conductive part of the car until one foot is down on the ground outside. Your static buildup is thus grounded, and there will be no shock.
Alternatively, you can always just close the door with your shirt sleeve.

The door handles on my car are designed to eliminate the static shock if you touch the bottom of them...

HHAHAHAHAHAHAAH. This thread is gold. I didn't think so many people had this problem. I don't think I've ever had this issue myself. And does it really hurt that much?

I have the same issue with my car when the air con is on. One of my friends always slammed my door shut because he did not want to touch my door with hands...
