Hi all,
I'm planning on going to Hong Kong at the end of the month or in November for a couple weeks..., what is the best way to book a cheap hotel for Hong Kong?
Would it be with Priceline? Or are there Hong Kong specific sites to get a good deal for a hotel?
Thanks!

I got 4* Eaton Hotel for $68 USD using priceline around November too. Newly renovated room with 42" LCD. Small but functional room. Very Happy with the stay, good location near Temple Street.

4* Eaton Hotel for $68 US is a hack of a deal. Can you specify hotels of your choice from Priceline?

No, you can't specify the hotels using auction websites such as priceline or hotwire. However, according to betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com, if you select 4* Central Kowloon, chances are very high that you will get Eaton Hotel.
I also noticed this hotel was won for as low as $60 USD and as high as $109 depending on stay period.

Do you guys recall how much highspeed internet costs at the hotel?
Thanks!

Eaton is a good hotel, but takes a bit of walk to the MTR station. Overall, I think its still a good place to stay.
In terms of internet charges, if u just need it from email and stuff, just go into any Pacific Coffee (they're like Starbucks in HK), which has internet booths set up for customer use. And as well, some MTR stations have them as well, off the top of my head, Central, and Kowloon Tong has that.

I stayed here in September ....location is amazing - room is good - I stayed there for a stop over when i landed in the basic room - on the way from Singapore i stayed there for 2 nts but upgraded to part city view - with the upgrade IMO however if you are ok with a simple basic place with a excellent location then this is the place IMO

d'oh doesn't look like hotels in HK around the end of Dec are going for ~$68USD/night anymore. :(
does anyone else have a suggestion for a more affordable solution to staying within the downtown core (i.e. tsim sha tsui, mong kok, yau mai tai, jordan, etc.)??? my mom suggested service apartments?!

Ok, I shouldn't share this deal, because I am using the loophole of the website and in a way I am abusing their loophole.
hotelclub.com has a special offer whereas you sign up before Nov. 30, you'll get $50 USD.
http://www.hotelclub.com/us50/ *expired* see below for new link with $50 USD.
The loophole is you can sign up as many emails as you can. I signed up twelve, so I save $50 x 12 = $600.
Here are some sample of hotels I booked.
-Two nights at L'hotel Nina in Hong Kong (5*) for $50 USD/nite including taxes.
-Three nights at Traders Hotel by Shangri-La in Penang (4.5*) for $25 USD/nite including taxes.
-Three Nights at Bali Nusa Dua beach (5*) for $105 USD/nite including breakfast & Taxes. It's expensive, but this hotel made it to Leading Hotels of the World's list.
- Two nights at Grand Waldo Macau (5*) for $75 USD/nite (Fri & Sat, as you know, rates on weekend on Macau is 3X of weekdays) including breakfast & taxes.

Hi,
Thanks for the tip.. I signed up and got $20.
So how do you end up using all 12 accounts? did you book each single day separately under each different account? Or, more like, each hotel separately?
And wow, are those prices all from hotelclub? I'm not seeing rates anywhere near those...!

Too many people signed up for that deal and hotelclub reduced it to $20 USD.
Use this link, it is still $50 USD. Also this $50 USD will not expire until Jan 31, 2009 as oppose to Nov. 30, 2008.

Sign up ASAP before it will be reduced as well.

Yes, those are the prices I paid (charged to my CC) for May, 2009 hotel stays.

Great tip!
One question: I am assuming you booked 1 night in each separate hotelclub account you set up. If so, when you checked in at the hotel, did you have to explain at the check in counter that you had booked a multiple # of 1 night stays at the same hotel?
If you don't tell the front desk ahead of time, would you not have to check out and check in on a daily basis?

1) Correct.
2) Yes, its a good idea to tell them because of 3), but not strictly necessary
3) Thats correct. It's more hassle and work for you AND them if you check in/out everyday.

I don't quite understand the problem. The max date for hotelclub is Dec. 31, 2010. Did you select 2009 in the pull down menu? All my hotel bookings are for May 2009.

Yes, the $50 USD member dollars will expire (disappear from your account) on Jan. 31, 2009. So, you should use it before expiration day. But that doesn't mean you can only book hotel stay up to Jan. 31, 2009. You can book hotel stay up to Dec. 31, 2010 (2+ years).

Scary place. We stayed next door in a similar setup fifteen years ago. About the only place if you want to spend less than $100 a night.

I never found it scary ... well only scary cause I've never seen a place so tightly packed and it (the whole building) would be a mess in a fire.
Wikipedia has an entry and doesn't indicate it has changed status ... so if the OP wants something really cheap and very to the bottom of Kowloon .... could probably get some more insite on this place via Lonely Planet guides

Yes, fires and earthquakes. Only time I've ever been in was for Indian food in 1985.

The place next door seemed nicer and easier to access. We also paid about $20 a night.

You can check the Anne Black YMCA near Mong kok. Good area. there are some sites that have these rooms for 50-60$ US.(low Season) Not just for women. They do have exclusive women's floors though.
