Replacing existing lights with pot lights?
We have 4 regular lights on the 1st floor of the hallway and was wondering how hard is it to replace them with potlights?
We will get more done later on but wanted to replace the regular ones with the potlights right now, and since we’re going to the states tom wanted to pick a few up…anything specific I need to look for when selecting the light?

Since you're talking about a 1st floor, I guess you have a second floor. So it means that the pots lights will be installed in a floor without insulation.
If it's the case, you don't need the more expensive ones.
The top floor has an insulated ceiling, and according to the Electrical Code of Ontario, all pot lights must be contained in an IC box (insulated ceiling box).
Therefore, additional labor and materials are required for top floor installations.

Thanks, I'm acutally hoping to install it myself. Has anyone replaced their exisiting lights with potlights? Also will I need to do a inspection even though all I'm pretty much doing is changing the fixture? Or are there any additonal wiring that needs to be done? Thanks

the existing lights should have octagon boxes and need to be relocated to the side of the floor joist (or whereever), then run bx cable from the octagon box to the potlight. don't forget to put covers on the octagon box after. Also, keep the can 1" away from any wood. Since you need access to the hidden octagon box, I'd go with a 5" or 6" remodeler can
