holy crap. i just tried to go to sleep 30 minutes ago (3:30am) and i fell asleep, but then i felt my eyes blinking really really fast and i couldn't stop it at all. my body felt numb and paralyzed and i just saw flashes of white like i was scared to lose my vision. has anyone ever had this? it's like a rapid blinking discharge. first i see all red, then i feel my eyes start to blink, but my eyelids are closed!

I've had that before. I was paralyzed also. It felt like I was asleep but I'm fully conscious =S.

I think it happens when you wake up just before you're about to dream.

Ha ha ha.

OP, if you feel asleep, and then woke up and experienced this weirdness, then it sounds like sleep paralysis.

If it happened while you were falling asleep it sounds like hypnogogia.

wtf no. Sleep apnea is the term that is used when there is an obstruction of airways or the person stops breathing for a split second while sleeping.

One of my closest friends practices astral projection and what got him into it was the OP description. He had the exact same thing and wondered what it was.

Q. What is Old Hag Syndrome?

A.
Victims of "Old Hag Syndrome" awake to find that they cannot move, even though they can see, hear, feel and smell. There is sometimes the feeling of a great weight on the chest and the sense that there is a sinister or evil presence in the room. And like the above reader, they are often quite frightened about what is happening to them. The name of the phenomenon comes from the superstitious belief that a witch - or an old hag - sits or "rides" the chest of the victims, rendering them immobile. Although that explanation isn't taken very seriously nowadays, the perplexing and often very frightening nature of the phenomenon leads many people to believe that there are supernatural forces at work - ghosts or demons. The experience is so frightening because the victims, although paralyzed, seem to have full use of their senses. In fact, it is often accompanied by strange smells, the sound of approaching footsteps, apparitions of weird shadows or glowing eyes, and the oppressive weight on the chest, making breathing difficult if not impossible. All of the body's senses are telling the victims that something real and unusual is happening to them. Rather than ghosts or demons, however, there is probably a scientific explanation: "sleep paralysis" or SP (sometimes ISP for "isolated sleep paralysis").

In her article, "Help! I Can't Move!," Florence Cardinal, About.com's Guide Sleep Disorders, writes: "Sleep paralysis is often accompanied by vivid hallucinations. There may be a sense someone is in the room, or even hovering over you. At other times, there seems to be pressure on the chest, as though someone or something perched there. There may even be sexual attacks associated with the hallucinations. The sound of footsteps, doors opening and closing, voices, all can be a very frightening part of sleep paralysis. These are known as Hypnagogic and Hypnopompic Experiences and they are what make people dread an episode of sleep paralysis."

OMG, this JUST happened to me today lol(sleep paralysis, not the blinking). As I was waking up, for a brief moment I felt as if I couldn't move my body at all. Although it quickly went away, it still felt weird, I can't remember the last time this had happened.

I'm not sure about the accompanying hallucinations, but in the middle of the night I did wake up wanting to fight the guy in my dream, a second later realizing the dream is gone, I just went to the bathroom and took a piss. Now I don't even remember what the dream was about, all I can remember was that I wanted to kick the guy's ass so badly.
