It's been a year or so since I had my last eye exam and I am pretty sure I need new glasses. I would just have used my old prescription numbers but unfortunately I can't find the paper it was on or my backup copy so I need to get a new one. What would be average price be for a typical exam? Just so I can get a pair of prescription glasses.

Some offer it free with a purchase of glasses/lens. If you want to go have your eyes checked with a optometrist, average is around $80. Or you can have them grab the prescription off of your current pair of lens.

I've paid $60 - $70 for an eye exam. I believe it's generally around that area.

Two solutions:
1. Just go back to the place where you got your last pair. They'll have your prescription on file.
2. If you you don't have any astigmatism and need reading glasses (are far sighted,) just go to a pharmacy or dollar store that has lots of pairs of different strength and try on spectacles until you settle on one that is the clearest. This is essential what you are doing in an eye exam when being fitted for glasses. They just use a fancy machine, but it is the same process.

I got my eyes checked about a month ago and it was $60. It was well worth the cost imo. The doctor was really knowledgeable and answered a bunch of questions I'd had. In addition to telling you your prescription, they also screen for a number of eye disorders.
This is your vision you are talking about...just pay the $60. :)

I think I paid $80 or $90 for my last exam exam at the optometrist. Cost me another $35 for a retinal image. :|

Wow, I have to say that a DIY eye exam is a really bad idea. An eye exam is not just to determine whether you need eye glasses or not. Its to determine whether you have any underlying pathologies which can permanently reduce your vision or leave you blind.
I mean, I suppose you could do the visual acuity test to determine if you were 20/20 but if you aren't, that would mean you would have to schedule an appointment with an optometrist to find out whether it can be corrected be refraction or not (well, I suppose you could do the pinhole test yourself too - poke a tiny hole in a piece of paper and look through it and see if you can read the smaller lines, if it can, it means your vision can be corrected by refraction, but that would mean you still have to go to the optometrist to find out what refractive power you need.)
Furtheremore, you have no one looking at the back of the retina. A healthy looking eye on the outside may present totally different on the inside. Diseases like glaucoma (2nd most common cause of blindness next to cataracts), macular degeneration (very common cause of central vision blindness), papillitis and papiledema, and retinal artery or vein occlusions all can lead to permanent vision loss.
