You kept a phone?? You realize most phones you find, people store their HOME number.. You could have called it and returned it to it's owner. I wouldn't be to proud of your "find" to me it sounds more like theft.

Hmmm, I've lost my wallet & purse, along with my car keys. I never recovered any of those items. :(
I never find valuable items, if I do, I take it to the police station or (at the uni.) lost and found center.

This (http://www.dailycupoftech.com/have-your-lost-usb-drive-ask-for-help/) might be old news to you, nice idea if someone honest picks it up.
There is also a way (http://www.ruwebit.net/nl/197) to make it email you when it's plugged into a foreign computer.
I haven't tried and tested the latter but combine both ideas and you would compel the finder to return it, lol.

I think I left it at the school library. I remember that was the last time I used it. Hopefully a staff would pick it up and leave it at the front desk or something.

Just to add on to the thread.
I lost my wallet few years ago. After spending months replacing all the ID. A staff from a Royal Bank branch that's an hour away from my house called me and told me that someone found it and saw a RBC card inside and returned it to them. I don't really need anything in there anymore except the actual wallet that I bought from HK for like $30HKD. Of course the money was gone, but there was only $4 and change in it.

I lost my UofT student card once...
Well, not exactly lost. I used it to gain access to the gym facility (Hart House), and upon exit (when they return it to you) it was nowhere to be found!!! So somehow the staff misplaced it. I came back to their front desk periodically to check if it had re-appeared or was ever found. After about 3 weeks, I gave up hope and simply went to get a new one and paid the replacement fee.
Of course, two days later (ugh... WTF?! I should have waited!!!) an old friend of mine contacts me and says he has my card! He was at the gym that day too, and apparently upon exit he was given my card and took it without checking. He didn't realize it for a few weeks. It was a funny coincidence it was given to somebody I knew. The gym staff usually asks for your surname upon exit, and they return your card by matching facial photo - my friend had the same last name, but looked nothing like me!!! (We're Chinese, so maybe we all looked the same to others... )

About 3 months ago I found a little leather wallet on the floor near my work place. It had nothing but about 80 cents in it. There was a phone number and name written inside the wallet. I called the number and an elderly lady said she had lost it. I drove to her place after work and she was so amazed and thankful that someone had taken the trouble to return it to her. It had been a gift from a grandchild. It felt so good to do this for someone. I probably would have done the same thing if the wallet had been empty.
Shame on the person who kept that cell phone. You could have at least tried and then kept it if the owner could not be found.

I found an iphone and an SE w580i in the last year. The iphone, honestly was never returned because I think it was a new phone so it had nothing on it. The w580i, I returned a few minutes after finding once the owner called and we met up.

Wow 15 years ago... Back then games were $0.25 & big ones like cruisin USA were $0.50
the most i found was a 20... I used to work in a movie theater as an usher. Whenever we cleaned the theater after shows we would always cash in on all the change people dropped. Once and a while there would be bills.
It was a nice 'tip' considering we were all paid minimum wage

I have found many cellphones which are usually dead when found. I'll buy the cheapest charger for that phone, charge it up, then call the home number or a contact number or last number dialed. Once owner is found, I give them my address as to where they can pick it up. When they arrive I explain that I had to buy a charger to get the phone working and track them down. I ask if they would like to buy the charger from me for what I've paid for it.(showing them the bill).
Have I ever been reimbursed for money I've had to put out to make all this happen???? NOT EVEN ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!
So I kept the last phone I've found and now it just sits in a box.
Every year I find wallets, cellphones, 407 transponders, cheques, keys, and so on. Last cheque returned a few weeks ago got me a six-pack of corona. Saweeeeeeeeeeeet! A wallet I just gave to york police.

Can't you just take the sim card out and put it in your phone instead of buying a charger? It's hard to believe most of the cell phone you found are dead in battery. Sounds like an excuse for greed

My phone from telus doesn't take a sim card.
And where does the greed come from??? All I ask for is to be reimbursed for the charger that I bought. The charger is then given to the owner. I do NOT make any money buy returning the phones to their owners.
Almost all phones I have found have been by the side of the road. I've had to turn around, and go farther back, turn around, then pull over to pick it up. Sometimes not easy to do on the 401 and 407. I've passed on doing this sometimes because it wasn't safe to do so.

C'mon...can't you think of a better story to cover up your greed? How in the world would someone be able to see a cell phone on the highway when driving 120kms/hr? And to go out of the way, turn around to pick it up? It makes perfect sense that you do all that so you could keep the phone. Besides, why would THAT many people drop their phone on the highway?

 Still don't understand what greed you are talking about. I'm always around $22 in the hole having to buy the chargers and not being reimbursed.
As for the how do you see that on the side of the road going 120 kms/hrs. Too be honest, I once saw a $20 bill in the grass approimately 30 feet away from the shoulder of the dvp at the 401. Co-workers were stunned when I pulled over and ran out into the grass, picked it up and walked back to the van with a huge grin on my face. Yeah, traffic was going about 5 kms/hr at the time.
Point is, pay attention to your surroundings. It can be a benifit to you in the long run.

Going to work about a year and a half ago, I found a SE phone smashed on the road in front of my FS store. I grabbed the phone and could not power it up (a few cars prolly ran over it) but I was able to take the sim card out and put on my phone. Found the contacts list and dialed "MOM" or "HOME". Talked to the owner's brother, who told me they were drunk the night before, and they were not locals, so he told me to "not bother about it" !? Then my phone with his sim card started getting txt messages and calls from his friends, so I called him again and the guy told me he did not care about the phone (nor the fact that anyone could make calls and he'd get billed for them) and after about 3-4 days his mother called me and asked me to mail the sim card out to her along with the sd card.
Lots of trouble to return a sim card to the legitimate owner. I still dont get why the kid did not even try to recover the phone at all. I had it for days and could have called LD and browsed the net, giving him a huge bill at the end of the month. and instead fo coming to get the card they asked me to mail it out !?

I do not look for these things to keep. I don't look for them to return them to their owners. I do metal detect so I think that is why I'm always scanning the ground.
AND if you really found THAT many dead cell phone, you have to buy a charger to get it work anyway, then why not return it to the owner?
I buy the charger to charge the phone to find the owner. That's the only reason for buying charger. I don't need another cell phone. Got 1 and no, it's not 1 that I've found. If I were to be greedy, then I'd buy the charger and sell it with the phone on kijiji or cgaigslist.:cheesygri
I've returned pets too buy checking lost ads. I have never returned a pet and threw in $20 to its owner. That is what I'm doing when I return cell phones.
It still doesn't make sense why would there be so much things to find on the highway. What? people throw their cell phone out at the window by accident when driving 120km/hr?
Be it a highway, freeway or any road. People pull over for many reasons and do drop stuff as they get in or out of their vehicule. Some leave items on top of their cars as they drive off. Some items may have been stolen and discarded from a moving car for whatever reasons. A phone clipped onto the overhead visor or in the door handle or sitting on the dash can easily fall out of a open window.

I found one of those tiny Pantec phones in the snow. The battery was dead and the phone was well used. I put the SIM into my phone and looked through it for numbers. This guy obviously met a lot of random chicks at bars because half of the 50 or so numbers were (chicks name + bar name). :p I spent like an hour looking for people with the same last name in the city (this was Barrie). Finally I spoke to the guy's uncle who was like "oh ya, we haven't heard from him in a while". Finally the dude arranges to come and get the phone and reunite it with its owner. The cheap uncle rolls up in a relatively new van and doesn't dare offer me a reward.  I should have been like "make sure your nephew gets an STD test" :D :D

You know you won't return it to the owner and still insist on picking up the phone and keep, that's simply greed! Doesn't matter you need another cell phone or not. AND besides buying a new charger, you could always find out the provider of the service on the actual phone and return it to them so they could return it to the owner.
