Can you guys tell me where to rent a good unit from??? If money was no object and you wanted to do it yourself, where would you rent the equipment from????

This place has all pro equipment and chemicals. They might rent out cleaners. Give them a call.

I actually bought a steam cleaner (Bissel) from Walmart for about $90 + solution is about $12. It does a great job and I can use it whenever I want.

Thanx, but I think I'm beyond the Bissel machines. The kids have really made a mess over the year and now I need something a bit stronger than what can be purchased from dept stores.

If I remember correctly, a friend of mine told me that he rented a carpet cleaner from home depot. Give home depot a call. Good luck.

Thanx folkes for all your help. A professional carpet cleaner that I know let me use his machines (even a small one for the stairs, cars and apholstery) over the weekend with the proper soap too!!!!

Is there any truth to a professional carpet installer telling me that steam cleaning disintegrates the backing and takes years off its life?
He explained this by showing me the grid, how it falls apart especially with hot water and then the fibers loosen and get vacuumed, "balding" occurs.
He said this is why a carpet that should last 15 years looks like it needs to be replaced after 5-7 years if it has been steam cleaned 3x or more. Pets, children and oils (bare feet) also reduce its life.
Greater degradation of course with the cheaper carpets and he mentioned it's always better to just spot clean.
He jokingly tells me Sears has this great cycle going on where they do this impressive job steam cleaning so you have them back every year or two.
And because they do such a good job, you go to them to buy carpet and it starts over again.
You know the picture, that skinny balding Sears guy with the mustache smiling as he is actually wrecking your carpet, lol (its been that ad for years).
He really had nothing to gain by telling me this except to teach me how to keep my carpet lasting longer.
