I am planning to have my Family room upgraded from carpet to hardwood. This wasn't done when we bought the house as my husband like the warmness of carpet. However, with 2 young kids in the house, it is very hard to keep carpet clean.
My question:
I would like to have the same type of hardwood installed as in my living/dining room. It is Mirage natural maple, 3 1/4" wide, select grade. My family room is around 110 sq ft. How much will this project cost (material and installation)?
Should I stick with Mirage brand?
Thanks.

I can't help with a price, but I can suggest that hardwood is alot harder to keep in good shape when you have kids. Also, carpets hide dirt better then hardwood..
We have a 3 year old house. Our now 17month old and 5 year old have caused many a scratch in our family rooms floor. We realized this was going to happen and plan on refinishing them in 8-10 years.
Depending on the age of your children you may want to wait before you upgrade.

If the rest of your house is Mirage, yes stick with Mirage, especially on 110 sq. ft. which is questionable (have never seen family room that size yet).
Because it's only 110 sq. ft.(120 sq. ft. of wood), most of the installers will charge you a min. installation charge. With Mirage maple installed, carpet removal, quarter round, the max price should be $1,500.

Thanks for the information. I think I did make a mistake in my calculation. It is a 15 by 12 feet room so the size should be 180 sq ft. So If I am looking at $12.5 per square foot ($1500/120), am I now looking at $2250 for the job?
Thanks.

Thanks for your insight. I thought it is harder to keep carpet clean as it is harder to remove food stains. My kids are 5 and 7 and I have just moved all their toys into the basement. However, scratches are another issue that worry me with hardwood. Any thoughts on how to keep hardwood as scratch free as possible? Does the brand/grade of hardwood make a difference?

If your kids are rough - i.e. bang toys on ground you'll definately have some nasty scratches. Also, furniture should have soft feet placed on them to prevent scratching.
It's easier to clean hardwood, but at the same time it takes a bit more care (ironic huh).
Here are a couple other choices:
Laminate: Quick to install, durable, but "cheap"
Vinyl Floor: Saw it at home depot
Bamboo: Durable, environmentally friendly, and getting quite popular!

Yes, that's correct. You can remove the carpet yourself & save a few bucks.

I have 3 1/4” Mirage Top Grade Natural Maple Hardwood Flooring in my First Floor. They are very hard. I have 8 & 1-1/2 years old home. They alway drop the toys, tape on them. They have just gotten some light dent.
When I was searching my flooring; I have tested (using folk to punch the floor sample). Mirage is the only flooring has less damage. Go for it.
Have a look to what after I install:

With 8 & 1 1/2 yr. old, give it couple more months & then you'll see the real test :D Maple natural or stained shows everything & the grade does not reflect on the quality of finish.
What other brands have you tested?

This is what I have in my living/dining room. I believe I need 180 SF (15 by 12 feet room). That means I will need to get 140SF from a store or contractor. Would the wood have changed after 4 years or just because the wood comes from 2 different batches, the finish/colour etc will be different? Thanks.
