View Full Version : how does a person "look" like they are in advertising/marketing?

some people at my office have repeatedly ask me what i do here, and when i tell them i'm in business planning (with engineers), they always seem surprised and say this:
"i would have thought you were in advertising"
and when i ask them what makes them say that, they said "you look like you belong there"
what the hell does that mean? they don't say it in a nonchalant way either, sometimes i get a slightly negative attitude from them.

i'm more concerned about the attitude others give off when they say this to me.
yea i'm a young female, but this is a fortune 500 company... they should be used to seeing different people of different ages everyday... they don't say it in a 'normal' way, they say it like i'm dumb and i have no right to be there or something.

i'm not an engineer. i only work with engineers.
and it's not people who work WITH me in my department. i get people who come up to me in coffee break areas, my own damn desk, and in the freaking ladies washrooms. and people from different floors.

i wear regular business casual attire. cool haircut? no. hardly. it's just long and black and regular. not cool at all.
i really dont think they mean it as a compliment...cause they seem say it with a negative tone... like i'm beneath them or something.

small talk is when you ask me how my day is going, or talk about how cold the weather is. but no need to give me that " you look like you belong there" it's not about confusing me because you thought i work with this department or that department. i'm just really annoyed with that sentence plus the tone.

*grins* I agree, but working with engineers, small talk could be that to them. ;) Just play along, and have some fun.

I would guess you dress fashionably or like a college student to get that question. Based solely on your posts in this thread, I'd lean more to you dressing like you just got out of college.
If you are as young as I think you are, and the people you are working with are generally older, that's why you're getting the question. Your idea of "business casual" may be a bit more youthful than others in the office regard as "business casual".
If this is the case, I wouldn't worry too much about it, always good to shake up the old farts once in a while.
On the other hand, if you want to get ahead in the company, start dressing for the job you want, not the job you have.

Great advice! In an office environment you are constantly running into people who may have consideration for your promotion down the line and first impressions are priceless.
My two suggestions are:
i) Have you gone to the marketing department and taken a look around? Maybe you can answer your own questions.
ii) Try asking someone who makes that comment what makes them think that, in as polite a way as possible.

Having been told by someone who works in marketing and advertising (with the actual agencies, working with them on briefs, campaigns, commercials, etc), they are usually tall, blonde, fit and very confident/open in their approach to things. Dressing well and prim is also one of the attributes.
She is not that and always jokes around that it can be a discouraging world for females in that business if you are not that... though she doesn't really have any confidence issues so its ok with her, but definitely has related how someone can easily feel outcast or 'down' in always being surrounded by all those marketing people.

I had a team/department dinner the other day, and there was one HR lady. She was pretty charming and easy to get along with. Very humble and was nice to be around.

1) our marketing department is located in headquarters in California. we don't have an advertising 'department' we use a third party agency but there are hp liasons that deal with them.
2) i did ask. they said "you look like you belong there" and then usually they stop the convo. i did ask one guy to elaborate but he just shrugged and said 'i dunno'.
