Need cheap suggestions for flat hard clear surface to cover table

I have this table that i need a clear flat surface to place on top, and needs to be flat so i can write on it without ridges in between. I do not want to get glass, and plexiglass seems to be really expensive, are there other cheap alternatives?

MDF? :confused: But won't be clear. If it needs to be clear glass or plexi is about the only choice...

Use an Epoxy coating over several coats and it will become smooth and hard enough to write on. It's permanent though, not sure if that's what you want.
