Hey guys,

I was wondering how hard is it to get a position as a bank teller/customer service representative? I am considering applying to various banks and would like to know if there are any ways that would increase my chances of obtaining this position i.e. resume, job experience, school. I do have 4 years of customer service experience. Should I submit my resume in person or online? Also does it matter if I apply to a bank even though I do not have an account their? (There is a Scotia Bank two minutes away from my house). Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Standing on your full shift and you have to balance the money that come in and out of your booth at the end of the shift. Dealing with customers complains and inquiries.

interesting you posted this because I actually got a job as a teller for my local scotiabank today. I have one and a half years experience in handling large amounts of money. two years of customer service. I also know a person on the inside which really helped. they didn't even bother with an interview. Like many jobs I think if you make a really good first impression you're in. btw i'm turning 19 this month so if i can do it anyone can. they also checked my criminal, education, and credit so make sure thats all in order otherwise it will be that much harder.

hope this helped.

Congrats, Scotiabank is a good company to work for - lots of opportunites. Probably the best bank in Canada to weather the credit crisis :D

It's too bad his teller's hours will be limited from 10am-3pm lol

Worst hours of operation ever!

I would like to know this too. Do I just walk into the branches and drop off my resume, or do I create a profile on their website?

Thank you all for replying. But I think what would help many of us who would like to become bank tellers is if we should apply online or do we go directly to a bank and hand in our resume?

You usually have to apply online. If you know someone, youll have a much easier time. If not, try and meet with a manager so they can select your name from the database for an interview.

Screw that online thing. Half the jobs that are available out there aren't even posted online. I know that about TD for a fact because a new one is being built right around the corner from my house and there's not a single job posted.

I even called TD's 1-800 number to ask why there aren't any jobs posted online. They didn't say anything useful but they did tell me to go in to the closest branch from there because chances are the manager there, or someone associated with that branch is responsible for the hiring and training of new employees.

Hope this helped. Had my first day today and I will tell you that this actually feels like my first real job. Up until now I've been working retail which just isn't the same.

I worked for a teller for 2+ years and I have to say that 99% of the new tellers that came in were through connections. Family, friends, banks love referrals and even my bank has an offer of 1000 if we refer someone and they do well (though this position isn't as a teller but as a telephone banking specialist). Your best bet really is to know someone but if not that doesn't kill your chances, just makes it real hard.

Yes, you have to make some connections!

My cousin works for a bank and she was hired basically because her dad was a good customer at the bank and he just happened to deposit a very large amount of money in their bank.

Its pretty competitive. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to know people to get in. But its nice to have a refferal.
about 90% of the people in my training class were external hires.

A LOT of people apply. Many people see it as an easy way to get their foot into the door of big company, which is probably what your all thinking :-O

My aunt says getting a job at a bank for a few months is a great way in because you can easily move from bank to bank. I had an interview by RBC a few days ago for a bank teller position because my aunt is friends with one of the HR people. The pay isn't great - about $12/hr for 20 hrs a week.

It's unbelievable that you think you should automatically be hired just because you meet the minimum qualifications. Obviously other people meet those too, and also could get hired. Since you know someone, you should be getting referred. It's completely stupid not to since you want the job.

As stated before, you can get a job with just qualifications. I was hired externally, and advanced within quite quickly without knowing anyone except my coworkers.

For the people who are working at the bank as a teller, how much money (approx) do you make per hour?

I'd say the average is $12 - $14

which level did you advance to? and how long it takes to get prompted.

I am desperately need a job change.....working 15/hr @ some back office.
went thr an agency, and one said Financial sector pays $12-14/hr....

I don't think I have any chance to get advanced in the near future(1-2 years).....

I started as a bank teller p/t and moved to a personal banking officer (branch sales) f/t within 1 year. Advancement is there if you work at it.

I went into management, but most bank employment contracts state you cannot change positions within a set period of time, so you should not expect it automatically. Luck and hard work allowed me to advance in violation of that provision.

$12-$14 sounds about right for a CSR position.
