Hi
I need a decent snowblower
My budget is $500.
I need some good brand names to look at.
Some dealers will also be fine.
Is a used one worth it?

The only thing that meets your budget is probably the MTD single stage snow thrower. I picked one up myself but can't comment on how well it works. At the same time, I have a 9.5 hp Craftsman 2 stage for heavy snow and end of driveway snow.

Unless you can increase your budget to about $700 (+taxes) you will have a hard time buying much in the way of a small 2 stage. I would buy a good shovel and save up to increase your budget. Keep an eye out in January for possible discounts or buy next winter.

Imo, buying used is risky and I would stay away from the cheapest equipment (at least until their are some reviews on how well it performs).

I have a 3hp MTD single stage snowblower and it works fantastic! This machine is now a few years old.

A couple of points to note with it. I need to keep the left side clear of the snowbank because of the air intake. No big deal, I plow the other side. And even on the left side the snow needs to be deep to affect it. The other thing is one wheel seems to freeze up, again no big deal.

At 500$, I think you should take a look at the classifieds. You'll get a better machine for the money because 500$ very limited.

Ex.: 1 month ago, I bought a 4 months old MTD Gold 28" 11 hp OHV for 500$. Maybe not the best snow thrower, but it should be ok.
